Sights

What sights should I get for deer hunting. I have a Mossberg 500 currently as a slug gun fully rifled barrel for deer hunting. One barrel is a cantilever with a scope. It works great for stand hunting. Problem is that we do deer drives and pushing deer with a scope doesn't work due to lack of acquiring deer in sights quickly. There are irons sights on my other barrel, but the accuracy just isn't there.

Has anyone ever put a reflex sight on a slug gun? Where you keep can keep both eyes open. Or are ghost sights the answer? Or is there another barrel out there with good iron sights?

Any help would be appreciated.

I was looking at a new gun, but can't find one I like.

Ithica Deerslayer seems nice, but can not find a dealer.

Winchester SX3 nice. Has iron sights w/ cantilever, but want pump gun(cheaper/less chance of jambing in cold winters)

Remington 870 - no better than my Mossberg

I would look and see if you can get fiber optic sights for your mossberg. Only problem I have with them is that they are usually cheap plastic and sometimes the sight at the end of the barrel breaks when walking through brush. I used to take super glue and run a bead between the gap of the fiber optic and sight base, making it solid. I had one with half of the fiber optic gone and used it for probably 3 seasons like that. Problem with accuracy and open sights is that at longer distances, is it covers up more of the deer so accuracy is going to suffer. At 30 yards, you can aim for a deers rib cage, at 100 yards, that sight covers up almost half of the front end of the deer.

i have a SX3 and it doesnt jam in cold weather. I run virtually no oil in it during the season though. Most all parts are coated with the duracoat or are anodized or whatever. But anyway...

If $ was no object I would put an EOTec sight on my deer gun ($400+). If $ is tight then a regular red dot can be had for under $100 I think.

Late summer I ordered a williams ghost ring set for my 870 rifled barrel. I have yet to shoot it, but so far it is easy to center the front sight in the ring. I know they make them for the mossbergs, check out their HSOforum since cabelas, midway and the other big websites never seem to have them in stock. Make sure it is the ghost ring and not just their fire sights....

Put your scope on the lowest power, and just practice keeping both eyes open. Practice until you can bring the scope up in front of your face and on target without having to search for the deer.

Is the open-sighted barrel less accurate because of the sights, or because the barrel is just less accuruate? (I wasn't sure reading your post.) If it's the first, mounting new optics might help. If it's the second, new optics won't do much for you.
