If you want to paint it black, paint about 2 ft. on the bottom white. our wheel house is painted a dark color and the banking melts on the west and south sides on a sunny day. We checked a number of liter houses and the melting on a sunny day is noteabley less.

Have a black 6ft by 9 ft--not a wheelhouse. Never had a problem, but we block it up well and use cheap plywood around the bottom, tacked on for easy removal. I would say your banking might melt a bit quicker, but the plywood skirt seal off the bottom pretty well. Note, do not put the plywood in direct contact with the ice. Keep it a bit off so you can add more blocks as needed to the corners. With a small spearing house there should be no problem.

Mr pike whats your favorite color? I would go with that

The best one I ever had was and still is my favorite color Chartuse green it was a 8x16 skid house on Mille Lacs on the far reaches of the flats and was nicknamed the Chartuse Goose by Barnacle Bill grin

They say black is beautiful, and it helps absorb heat too. Guys I know way up north always have hi power rifle with them to shoot the ice if the house should happen to freeze in. I know none of them have ever has a black house melt through the ice though.
