It's time...

Brooky

Recommended Posts

It's that magical time of the year once again for me. There's a 3 week window of opportunity where I can catch Brook Trout that are measured in feet, not inches. Monster fish that take two hands, not one, to hold for a photo. Fish so big and beautiful, that if you catch one, you'll be tempted to say to yourself that you're done. You've reached the pinnacle of fishing. Fish that make you so content that you'll contemplate selling all of you gear and taking up bowling or golfing instead. Fish.... well, like this.

that would be an awesome brookie to catch. seen some nice ones caught by Butch Furtman out of lake nipigon up there in one of his shows. would be nice to experience it in person for sure. i have one mounted that i caught in Topper lake on the gunflint trail that went 3 lbs i caught on hard water. i dont know if i will ever match that again in minnesota. heavy snow, lot's of ice and only 2 feet of water. good luck.

That trout would indeed be a thrill to catch. Unless it was dragged up from the deep on some sort of trolling gear using wire line and a big slab of a lure.

Come great fishin' in that part of the world, no question about it.

Beautiful fish. Take it there are slot limits? I bet the brookies in the lakes taste just as good as brookies out of a trout stream? Do they have bright pink/orange meat? How do you like to prepare them? If smoking big enough to cut in horse shoe slices?

That place and time is one of my dream trips. I would love to have multiple chances of catching brookies like that. I would get a replica for sure.

Are they in the lake or swimming up the feeders streams?

Unfortunately no monsters this year. Conditions were tough with hot calm weather and near 70 degree water temps. We did manage a few smaller fish, up to 20" or so. Maybe next year...

Thanks for the comments guys.

Not sure why anyone would want to keep a ooaster. They are near extirpated from the US side of superior, With the true "north" shore being one of the few plces with a real chance at a fish as gorgeous as that.

And BTW, once trout reach that size they are not anywhere near as good as those 14 and smaller ones. Even those loopers that everyone makes such a big deal about are really nothing fantastic. Id take a coho anyday.
