Insurance question

Hoffer

Question

So, I have a company leased vehicle.

They dont want us to tow boats or trailers etc.

I am not sure if they DO or DO not have liability insurance - but the bottom line is that if my boat left the trailer while towing it and hit someone else - I dont think they will stand behind me - because they have said to not tow things with company vehicles.

So, my question is...is there any kind of "one off" policy or seperate policy a person could purchase for JUST the liability portion of what I would be missing from the company policy? I spoke to my insurance agent who handles my boat part - and they dont do anything like that...but thought maybe there is some kind of company out there that might specialize in something like this? Keep in mind I dont own the car or anything like that...its just a company vehicle that is leased. It is in my posession 24/7 and I use it for everything...all business and all personal.

I think that you might be opening up a can of worms since the truck is no owned by you and there is a company policy saying to not do what you want to do. I don't know if your company is saying this because they have certain criteria that need to be met to pull a trailer or what. I know in our company that if you intend to pull any type of trailer with a company vehicle, you have go thru a very intensive training course and pass a skills test. I hold a CDL A and they won't let me pull a trailer until i go to the class. I would check with you company, might be cheaper to buy an truck to pull a trailer than risk my job for it. good luck

I have no doubt that if the company even found out that you were violating company policy by pulling a trailer someone else would be doing your job and driving the truck they provide for you.

Ya gotta ask yourself is it worth it???

I agree. The fact that they said "don't do it" should be a good indication to not do it.

This is the way it works for folks with company vehicles where I work. They can tow stuff for official company business only, not personal. I admit it does seem conflicting to have full personal use of the vehicle, but not really. However, that is the policy.

I also agree about 1000%

More than likely you would be violating the lease agreement your company has made with there leasing company.

With the job market in the shape it is why in the world would you even want to take a chance confused

I don't think its a matter of if the insurance company would cover this or not. The insurance policy would probably will cover this. In Minnesota, liability is assumed by the vehicle doing the towing. It's more of a company policy that says you're not allowed to tow.

I would agree with everyone who says "don't do it". It's not worth risking your job in this job market.

Good advice guys. Guess I better start looking for a 2nd vehicle to tow with. Looking at either used jeep grand cherokee or a chevy silverado 4 x 4. Any sugestions for overall dependability? They will have high miles on them - as i am looking to buy used and only spend 5K or less.

Thanks again
