Common sense,, I can use a barrel..........

Recommended Posts

Well I must have missed this one before was it in the rules last year?

""Use of drum on private land for baiting bears.

A private landowner or person authorized by the private landowner may use a drum to bait bear

on the person’s private land. The drum must be securely chained or cabled to a tree so that it

cannot be moved from the site by a bear and the drum may not include a mechanical device for

dispensing feed. The drum must be marked in the same manner as bait station signs.

A “drum”means a 30 gallon or larger drum.""""

Oh Joy I can use less bait and no concern if it rains...Yipppie,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Copy/pasted it off the state site regs...

Im laying it on the side opening down on a couple logs so it drains.

I use them at my "observation" sites that way. Im gonna still go aprox same time each day they really get tuned to ya and makes for quick pickings.

Gonna really save me bait..

Got board this afternoon waiting for decooys to dry so I decided to browse the new regs, low and behold a gift from the dnr....

I wasnt very excited before but now "Im stoked"..

Jay using a barrel i assume u are asking, some chain it to a tree others chain it with some length so a bear can roll it around an have the goodies drop out, if I use one, im gonna chain directly to a tree so a bear cant move it, then I'll have a hole cut about 2/3rds the way up the barrel an big enough so a big bear can get his paw in an scoop out a pawfull of gooddies. I now have a use for that 50 lb tootsie roll, drop it in the barrel an let the bear claw at it to get snibits of candy but not the entire thing or large chunks.

So with a barrel do you still make a crib or just put all bait in the barrel. Don't critters get into it and take much of the bait if the bear doesn't get to it first? I'm not questioning it I just don't see the big benefit to it, having never used it.

No ya dont have to make a crib. pop a hole in the top or on the side like I mention, Just got off the phone with 1957 an he likes to put a 10x10 inch hole in the top lid with a 30 gal. drum. The drums are chained loosely to a tree, but only so a bear can tip it over an scoop out the goods. You dont want the bear to bea able to roll it all over the place an outa of shooting lane. As it sits up right for baiting, you can cover the hole with a big log to keep the critters out. if you have the hole in the side chained directly to a tree, you can stuff in branches to keep critters out. I think its alot easier to keep critters out of a barrel than a crib, cause coons have all the time in the world to dig their way in an they do get in unless u take the time to build a really tight crib, then they do eventually get in. No reseting crib after its been riped open which takes more time. Just tip up barrel an dump in bait an cover with log. If you cant bait for two or three days just put that much bait in the barrel, yes once a bear gets his fill, wats left is open to the critters, but once a bear takes over a site the critters are usually kept at bay. So if you put in enough bait for a few days, the less human intrusion at a site the better with a mature bear.

if ya chain it directly to a tree, then you can put it in a position that give a nice broadside or slightly quatering away shot. Also a barrel is a great sizeing tool when judging a bear. I feel a barrel has nothing but benefits when baiting.

What food is best to put in a barrel? I use sweets and bread with grease, is that good in a barrel? I also heard something about a change in dates, has the season or baiting dates changed? Thanks!

wat ever u use in a crib can be used in a barrel. I've seen pictures of superbeee's barrels an he uses an oat grain mix, an has triangulare holes in the barrel so a bear has to work to get the stuff out, there for keepeing him occupied an at the site longer.

Wow u dug that up from awhile ago. thanks jb. his type of barrel is good for grain type bait. A bear will roll it around till the oatmixture flls out then gobble it up. I took a plasma cutter an cut a 10x10 inch hole in the lid, the lid has that clamp on seal. Which will be good for the type of bait im useing, doughnuts candy ect. to be scooped out with a huge 7 inch wide paw. then i took a pice of 2 inch diameter pipe 6 inches long an welded it to the base of the drum so i can run a chain thru it with out pucnturing the barrel. I saved the lid cut out so i can weld it back in place if i need to use the barrel for bait storage at the end of season. that is of course if a 500 lb booner boar dosent smash it flat an use for a ski. Which im predicting in earnest. Later boar
