I was messing with the new straight shank gammys the other day and really like them other than the fact that the entire shrink tubing keeper slips down the shank after a few fish. Other than that it has a welded eye, heavy shank, nice bend, and the tip doesnt roll over like I have seen with other straight shanks.

Turn up the fishing -

Last night in our league I was tossing a warmouth on a 6.6 loomis spinning rod, peged 1/8th oz tungsten bullet head sinker, #4 trokar ewg worm hook. I had the hook go through then I texaposed it by kinda sticking it back just under the plastic. The bait did work, and I did catch a fish on it after skipping it under a dock. I was a bit disapointed in that the eyes fell off the warmouth rather quickly but I was skipping it around alot of docks and such. Tough night overall though - Between partner and I - three fish total in three hours. Two other fish hit KVD 1.5's on break just outside thicker weed edge. Out of 15 teams 4 got skunked, 2 caught 1 fish total, and 2 caught 2 fish total. Tough going... I really do like that warmouth and think the more I fish it (in the right spots) it will shine. The size is perfectly matched to young injured / dying sunfish forage. Colors are great, and action is subtle.

I tried using a 4/0 gama hook and couldnt get it to rig up very well on it until I rigged it on its side but then it would just bunch on the hook. I also tried a straight shank hook but that was no better. One of the eyes fell off mine pretty quickly but I was expecting that.

Ill give them a better chance again in different scenarios some time but I was fishing league last night too and couldnt be missing fish and experimenting all night.

For the price though I gotta say I think Ill opt for beavers in most situations before the warmouths.

Turn up -

You are supposed to rig them on their side. That is what they are intended for. There isn't a hook made that I'm aware of that would work the other way (like a swimbait) the warmouth body is too rounded. I had mine bunch up a couple times but a dab of superglue near the hook eye and a pegged sinker helped to limit that. Cant help it too much with any plastic if your skipping it far due to how hard you have to cast it. In clear water I think the warmouth will have big advantages to other beaver style baits. In dirty, or stained water I don't think it'd matter much. I agree though. They are a bit spendy. Here is an image of how you rig them up.

My next trip out I'm going to fish a clear water lake and fish the warmouth on a carolina rig in some deeper water adjacent to a big weed flat. Thinking 12 lb flouro leader about 3 or so feet long and draging that small sunny looking bait real slow right near bottom. Maybe a squirt of some smelly attractant and hopefully it's game on. Like I said before it is real looking and in clear water it should do well. Without the skipping around docks the eyes will prob stay on longer too.

Tried something this weekend & figured it might be worth sharing. Took a 4 inch tube and in order to make it more weedless, slid a bullet sinker up into the hollow body then rigged it texas style with a 4/0 ewg hook. I was using Yum tubes and dipped tail into some spike it garlic sented dye. This gave the tube a very blue gill ish look as I worked it through heavy cover. Had a good day using this method/aproach for the most part. I'm sure alot of people do that whole sinker thing but maybe it'll help some guys fish cover with a bit less hassle.

Take a tube, put a sinker dowqn to the head (or put a screw in weight in the head from the outside of the tube), glue a piece of worm to fill the tube, then rig it backwards with a wide gap hook....Looks awesome in the water and fish love it!.....Can be worked slowly, head is always down, tentacles undulate seductively.

Tried a pumpkin colored Fintech Title Shot Jig with a 4" green pumpkin tube yesterday and it worked really good. Push the keeper through the nose of the tube and texas rig the hook. It's extremely weedless.

I LOVE the Title Shot jigs - so glad I picked a few up at Richards last time I was down in the big city. Black has been the best color for me...they work great with tubes, worms, craw trailers...good stuff!

I'm not sure where I heard it, (maybe this site, maybe read it in a Bassmaster magazine) But has anyone ever heard or tried to put small peices of Alka-selzer inside a hollow tube body? I haven't tried it but I think there maybe something to it as far as getting attention. I'm not sure how good that would be for the water or if it would even work.... Just a random thought is all.

I heard that this year as well, and found out it is more common than you think...Give it a try, i want to see fish pics with foaming mouths grin

Been a dirty trick for smallmouth guys for years. I have some in my tacklebag all the time. Smallies are curious as all get out, and they'll swim a long ways to see what the commotion is about when you cram a chunk in a tube. You can dead stick it on a key spot, and just wait for the line to start moving sideways. There was even a company that made capsules for this - they were basically pill capsules with Pop Rocks in them. Don't think they're around anymore but the did work.

Obviously not a way to cover water, but if you have them located and they won't bite, it's worth a shot. When it works, it really works. Plus it's kind of fun...

Look for Lindy E-Z Tube weights. They're kind of goofy little things - a cylinder of lead with an open end and a hole on the side. You slide it into a tube with the open end toward the head of the tube, slide the hook point through the tube head and into the open end, then out the hole on the side, and Texas rig it. Internally weighted tube, and since the hook bend holds the sinker in place it won't slide down and interfere with a hookset, or fall out.

When I skip docks, this is what I use. You can skip a tube a mile with an internal weight. You can also get them with a brass rattle, which I really like.

Eagle Claw makes a Quick Clip weight that's similar, but I like the Lindy ones a lot better.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
