Is it wrong that I cannot wait for ice to form on the lakes. I guess the fact that I do not have a boat or the time to do serious fishing in the summer is why I find myself wishing I was sitting on the river in my FT listening to the radio while sipping a beer. I love the summer but miss the fishing I get to do in the winter. Anyone else messed up in the head like me?

Crisp air, smell of 2 stroke auger starting up, snap of the little buddy heater fired up, Vexilar lighting up, dropping of the Buck Shot rattle jig to the lines on the vex and the crack of your favorite cold one........

ahhhhhhhh much better now!

Thanks rippinlip, after sitting here at my desk reading your post over & over & over & over, I get caught staring off into space, drooling, and trying to open and take a drink from my mouse. How embarrasing!

If you base your calculations on the day after Thanksgiving as the first day of ice fishing like I do (it's usually 3-4" by then up north), it's only 141 days!*

*Yes, I have a count down on my calendar at work.

i can remember 4 years that we could not walk on this small lake north of duluth a week after thanksgiving. there normaly is at least 4 inches of good ice on this lake at this time and we dont have to walk far from shore. i got a feeling this will be one of those years when i would be able to walk on the lake there a week after thanksgiving. snowfall always is a big factor after first ice as we all know. good luck.

I don't have a certain number of days but my general rule I go by is the following:

first week of December walking out.

week after Christmas driving out.

January to first week of march driving only.

the earliest I have been out is a couple days after thanksgiving. that was a exceptional year for the number of day I was able to be on the ice. it came early and stayed late.
