Biggest Perch ever!

Recommended Posts

I went fishing out on Leech lake this weekend and caught my biggest perch ever. 15 inches. It was great watching that big girl swim in and hit my bait. The only bad part about that day was that I had a second one on equally as big, but got the hook caught on the bottom of the hole and watched her swim away.

I was wandering what everyone elses biggest perch is and what lake did you catch it on?

Saw a 15.5"er come out of a lake in Canada last year (bad part was that it was on my uncles line about 20 feet away). My personal big perch was from lake Simcoe (sp?) in canada through the ice and it was 13.5"

17 3/4" out of Hobart Lake near Valley City, ND in February of 2001. I didn't (and still don't) own a scale, so I never weighed it. I would guess she would have been fairly close to the 3 pound mark. All I can say is that it was one of the most grotesque looking fish I have ever seen.

14.25" shortly after Christmas '02 on a lake real close to where the MN state record perch came out of.
It was so ugly and spotted, I let her go. Wish I had a picture of it, well, it was so ugly maybe not!

Gotem, what state are you talking about? The SD record has been broken a few times in the last ten years, in 96 when I caught my 2 lb. 6 oz. perch it would have been SD record two weeks earlier, it got bumped up to 2lb. 9oz, and that is the official state record, altough I've heard rumors of larger caught they were never official, I caught mine on February 27th, 1996, the state record was caught Feb. 24th, 1996, and a co-record was caught March 30th, 1996, those are the official numbers in the book.

I guess I will defend myself. I never said the weight of the fish that I caught, only the length. If you don't believe me, that is up to you. A perch that size is very uncommon, and I consider it the catch of my lifetime. I have a few pictures, but they really don't do the fish much justice.

During the time that I caught mine, there were a lot of large perch being taken from Hobart. I personally saw a 16" perch caught by a fisherman that same year and my wife's cousin caught one that went 16 7/8" that I saw a picture of.

By the way, I don't drink, and though I have heard and told many fish tales over the years, this one was real. I guess that I shouldn't expect everyone to believe what they read on an internet bulletin board and I am not surprised by the response. However, I know the truth and I don't care what anyone else says.

Got it Gotem, thanks for the clarification, and 3 lb.s is one HUGE perch, but I believe the guy, I've seen some people with huge fish that don't even know it might be a trophy, they're just out fishing for supper and look, they caught supper for the next two weeks!

When I was attending college up in Ely at Vermilion C.C. my roommate and I used to slay huge perch on Shagawa everytime we went out(3-5 times/wk). This was back in the winter of 95-96. Both of us caught perch in the 15"+ class. Of course we were broke and hungry and stuck a knife to every last one of them. We used to joke with our other roomy from Washington D.C that we were going to the fish market to pick up some fresh fish for supper!Thats how good the perch fishing was for us.

Was just wondering what the length of the Mn record is. I was looking and it only gave a weight. Would anyone possibly know how long this was. Had an experience this winter but im not going to even bring it up yet for people to spectulate.

I know this is a little off topic, but my dad caught a beautiful 3lb bass years ago that he decided to have mounted. Well the bad sighted taxidermist painted the fish like it was a perch when he mounted it. So my dad had a 3lb bass that looked like a perch!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
