deer/rabbit repellent for a garden

hockeybc69

Question

I have seen various repellents at stores. Do they work? Anything better than anything else?

What about homemade recipes? I did a google for homemade deer repellent and there are some interesting concoctions.

I have had wonderful success with "Liquid Fence". Fairly expensive for the concentrate bottle, but it lasts quite a while. I have a dedicated spray bottle with the mixture in it and hit mine every few weeks.

I used the liquid stuff two years ago and ended up with a fence for last year. The liquid stuff worked for awhile but would wear off to quick for my liking. I just ended up with a small plastic fence to keep the darn things out.

I dont feel like putting up a 6 ft(or higher) fence for the deer though. smile

Rabbits, no problem. I had a 2 ft one around it last year but the deer wouldnt stay out.

Was hoping for some miracle cure to the problem. LOL

The lady at our local garden center told us to use the granulated stuff as it lasts much longer then the liquid.

I have also heard that Milorganite - dont know if i spelled it right, works too. And it is a good fertilizer im told.

I swear by "liquid fence". I have a 3' fence to keep out the critters and then I string some yarn or kitchen string across the top of some 6ft posts. I can step through easily but deer don't like placing the head/neck against it. I spray the liquid fence on the string and the fencing and maintain it every other week and the deer stay out. I know they are there because when I followed the "directions" and stopped applying it more often the deer returned. That of course was before I added the string.

We've used Plantskydd in the past to keep the deer off of our White Pine during the winter. It does last pretty well and is initially effective (pigs blood based I believe). The problem is the deer get accustomed to it after awhile and figure it out. Last couple of winters use, it's done nothing at all. Good thing we also bud cap or those things would be toast.

My apple trees that I just planted got a real 6' fence. I tried planting apple trees 2 years ago in the fall and the deer had stripped all of the leaves off overnight.
