Trokar hooks

Ok will someone tell me what's the point of this hook. I just seems like an answer to a question that has never been asked. I have never had a problem with not being able to set the hook hard enough nor have I ever though to myself "boy is my arm tired from setting the hook". Even with bungy mono! If when fishing and my arm does get tired I switch from baitcaster to spinning gear.

When one hook cost more then a crankbait,,, something is wrong. Good luck with the marketing on this one!

I agree with you two. There is no need for a hook this expensive I think Gamakatsus are plenty sharp for me. Plus half the fun of bass fishing is crossing their eyes with the hookset!

I have used there EWG hook and i have never lost a fish. With that being said every bass i have caught on them have took the hook deep and there hard to get out, i think it mite be there z-bend or what ever it is. Dont wast your money on them, the only reason i would buy them again is because they have lots of hooks for lots of applications.

to me it seems as one of the ideas to catch fisherman not fish. I have never had a problem with gamakatsu. They will all dull. And I don't think I've ever lost a fish because i couldn't set the hook. If they get off its probably my fault

I think there is no such thing as too sharp of a hook. I also have never had a prob with gamies and last year i even used alot of regular eagle claw lazer hooks just because the barb is that much bigger(and half the price). I guess my only draw back from the hook the fact that there $2 a piece!

This is one area where eagle claw failed in their marketing. The package actually contains more than one hook, anywhere from 4-10 I believe, depending on hook style and size. I've actually talked to and seen a few people in the stores who say "10 bucks for one hook!!??!!" Then walk away shaking their head. I admit the package looks like only one hook, but if you sit and read the package it states the exact quantity., which is more than one.

Never used them myself though, my Owners and Gami's are plenty sharp enough for me still.

Hiya -

I've never heard anyone say "my hooks are too sharp." I got some to try and ended up really liking their flipping hook, although more for the overall design than the point specifically. I haven't experienced the point folding over, and they do seem to hold their edge pretty well. For heavy gauge hooks like flipping hooks, I like the concept of a cutting point, which is why I also like Owner flipping hooks. I'm a big fan of Ultrapoint hooks too, but like them better in lighter gauge hooks.

I don't think they're essential, and they aren't vastly superior to any other premium hook out there whether it's Gamakatsu, Mustad, Owner, or Matzuo, but they do work as advertized.

Certainly far superior to what we all fished with 15 or 20 years ago though when all you could get were standard bronze hooks. Through a friend in Arizona with some connections in Japan I and a few other guys were ordering Gamakatsus from Japan before they were available in the US, and we couldn't believe how sharp they were. Can find them at the gas station now...

I'll be the first to say, "My hooks are too sharp." LOL's.

I remember the very first few Owner cutting point hooks I used. They were too sharp and they cut big gashes in fish. I had a carp with a three inch throat gash before the hook was leveraged deep enough to stick. I guess I had too weak of a hook set problem and was giving the Owner cutting point hooks a try to get those results. I also had other fish caught with gash cuts before hook point sticked. The Owner hook quality these days have gone down. I can see it in some of the hooks I've bought in more recent years.

I haven't tried any of the Lazer Trokar hooks. I might be repeating what I've found when I first used Owner Cutting point hooks. Only that when I thought Owners were overpriced, now it's the Lazer Trokar hooks.

I do think every hook manufacturer has an "occasional" bad run of hooks. I had a bad run with an economy pack of Gammy EWG hooks last year. They were bending straingt out on hook sets (using 20lb fluro). I started using the superline hooks since then and haven't had any problems. I have been a big fan of the owners as well especially the extra wide gap plus for beavers and tubes. The bait lies really nice on this hook.

I have still not bought into the Trokars yet. I have been using there flippin hook and the new straight shank tube hook and havent been able to tell the difference compared to similar style hooks of other manufacturers.

I actually do think think there is such a thing as a hook that is too sharp. I used some Trokars last year just after they came out. They are great hooks, but due to the fact that they are so sharp they do have a tendency to bend over as others have pointed out. I've gone back to gammys now.

I'm a Mustad ultra point guy. I have had gammys roll over more than any other hook-I will use them in open water situations but not around rocks, docks, or wood. Have not tried Trokar yet.

Was at FF in Lakeville today and noticed they had all their Trokars on clearance for 35% off. Couldn't pass up that deal to try them so picked up a couple packs of the Flippin' hooks. First thoughts of them out of the box, I love the design of the bait keeper, hopefully it stays in place. Also the wire diameter seems perfect, not too thick, not too thin. And man, are they sharp! Yes they are sharper than any of my Mustads, Owners, or Gami's under my 15x magnifying glass, although disappointed one of the hooks came with the hook point already point bent over. Gonna try em this weekend to see how they compare.

I think I heard once that they fixed the roll over issue, not 100% sure on that.

I think what they are marketing at is the ammount of force required to penetrate.

When I used to work at 3M, I had access to mechanical testing equipment and tested penetrating force of several hooks and found that for the most part it was related to how big the barb was, not how sharp the hook was. Fold over the barb and all of a sudden the force was much smaller. Makes sense if you think about it: psi; the larger your penetrating area, the higher the force.

At that point I figured the sharper the hook point, the more likely you were to catch the hook on the hook set.

Now, a cutting edge could change this game but it's still a point to consider, so to speak.

For the price they are not overly special but I can notice the difference between how much power it takes to set. You can get away with a much lighter set than with other hooks (mainly use gamis). I have not used them all that much but they do seem to put a few more in the boat on those awkward sets when the fish aare running or when they are not holding baits long and a wrist snap hookset is easiest and fastest.

Still gonna stick with gami value packs though

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
