Sturgen ?

My technique for catching my first and only Sturgeon is as follows; Minnow on spinner rig set up walleye fishing, troll for bit, stop boat, crack beer and talk for a bit, when you begin to reel up - low and behold - a Sturgeon.

I got a 56 incher this past spring up on the Rainy River. Fought it for about a half hour. 6 pound test line with a medium-light action rod, no horsing this one in Took two guys to land it. Caught a smaller one earlier in the week too. Caught it on a White Firetail Ring-n-Grub with a 1/4oz jighead...

Those big sturgeon are a lot of fun! Hold on to the rod and sit back and enjoy the ride

We've mostly used worms on Rainy but chicken or turkey livers and gizzards work, too.

Two of my sons fish Sturgeon every fall in Wisconsin. They use several night crawlers for bait on salt water casting rigs with a 3 to 5 ounce slip sinker and 5/0 to 6/0 circle hooks or Octopus hooks. The line is anywhere between 30 and 110 lb. test. Last weekend, they caught and released over a dozen fish, the largest was 60 inches. A few years ago they hooked one at 10:30 pm and took turns fighting it until they lost it at 7:00am the next morning. They came home looking like they had been dragged behind a truck.

In addition to crawlers I like to add crawfish scent.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the best bait and technique to use for sturgen fishing?

I use a #2 hook with a 3/4 oz bell sinker.
3 nightcrawlers hooked head first, then hooked by the tail. Some guys will put minnows along with the crawlers as well.

I landed my largest fish this weekend. It went 70 1/2 inches. Est. weight of 120 lbs. I will post pics as soon as their are developed. I still have a smile on my face.

Was that a Minnesota fish? The state record is just over 94 lbs and measured 70". At 120, you should be in the record books.

As far as technique, the crawlers on the bottom with a heavy weight is the ticket. I have also put a couple dead, smashed minnows on for added scent--I don't know if that helps or not, but since sturgeon caught with minnows while walleye fishing are pretty common up here, it can't hurt.

No the fish was not caught in MN.

The monster was a blast. It took about 45 min. to land, but we were lucky to get a net on her. She wasn't quite ready. Once she got in the net all H-E-L-L broke loose. The net brakes, water flying every where. I looked like Lance on the Mississippi, that's how wet I got. Well, almost that wet. Anyways, back to the fight. This fish was staying down, staying down. Finally she decided to show herself to us. From 22 ft down, she started making way towards the surface. I'm reeling in slack as fast as I can. In about 2 seconds the water erupts (sp), completly coming out of the water for not one but two explosions. Her head was whipping back and forth violently, it was nuts. Only to disappear back to the depths again. Once back down on the bottom, the rolling starts. Anyone who has tangled with a sturgeon knows if your line is going to brake, this is when it will happen. The fish ends up getting my line wrap around her pectoral (sp) fin and wasn't nearly as mobile. So now I'm trying to horse her in. Once up toward the boat, she made a few last desperate attempts to escape. But ended up in the net instead. "AWESOME" is what I said.
