I went out morel-hunting for a bit this morning in southeast Iowa. We actually had a light frost here Thursday night, but it was warm and sunny enough yesterday that I thought some more grays might have popped. I did find about twenty more small grays, and I after I got home I found this little bugger crawling up my leg:

I have a feeling with the wet cool spring were haveing this year is going to be terriable. I'm willing to try anything and hope this product works, my wife five year old daughter and myself have all been diagnosed with lymes disease. My wifes case is the worst of the 3 with her being phyically disabled from it.

In addition to tucking my pants in my boots and cinching them down, I wear light-colored clothes while mushroom hunting--white shirt, light khakis. It makes me look less like a turkey (important when hunting public ground), and makes it easier to see ticks.

they can talk about the bird flu, the swine flu, H1N1, any epedemic they can think of to get us in a panic, nothing, I say nothing is going to top the actual affects on the united states population than lymes disease.

when I was younger, a might get a tick now and then. it was part of the outdoors and a sign that you had been "up north" over the weekend.

I never missed a hike through the woods. camped all summer long all over wisconsin and Minnesota.

now, when I look out across a ditch to the woods, the first thing that comes to mind is ticks.

the dog ticks are nothing to me. those deer ticks make me want nothing to do with the woods during the non-snowy months.

put it this way. they are so difficult to spot at times that any one, I mean anyone who spends any amount of time in the woods now days, is going to contract lymes disease. it is a very debilitating disease and can be fatal. while I have know dozens of people who either have or have had lymes, I do not know of any who have died from it yet.

I know one individula whom the dr.s thought had multiple sclerosis (sp) and for years he was screwed up. couldn't work, and could barely function. turns out, he actually had lymes disease and now it's so far along they are not sure they can get him back to normal.

Lymes is a serious threat.

It seems to be working I wore a par of normal jeans last Tuesday and had probably 75 or more ticks through out the day on wed I wore my camos that I had treated and found maybe 10 one of those were dead. I didn't spray as much on to the clothing as it recommends so it should work better if the directions are followed.

The topic of Lymes hits home for many of us, as we know someone or we are someone who is effected by this. I have a cousin that has it but closer to home for me is that my oldest Son has it. It was one of the scariest moments as a parent when your then 16 year old son can't get up out of bed and was burning up with a severe fever. I had to carry my teenager down the steps and out to the car to go to ER because of this disease. Thankfully he recovered with some very strong medications but this always serves as a reminder to me Everytime I step into the woods. It does take some of the enjoyment out of the outdoors but I still venture out though. Seeing what it can do to a perfectly strong young man in minutes is scary though... I wouldn't wish that on my enemies.

Well...I went to bed feeling fine yesterday, and woke up today feeling tired and sore. I went out morel-hunting this morning, and had to rest on a log. Then I had to take a three-hour nap this afternoon: I never have to do either of these things. Now I have a low fever and a bit of a headache.

I am betting it is just a cold, or some garbage bug, but I'll keep an eye on it just in case. I never found a deer tick on me, but that doesn't mean much, and I have not seen a bulls-eye rash anywhere, but my understanding is that doesn't always happen with Lyme disease, either. If I don't feel better in a few days I'll go to the doctor just to be safe.

You don't need to get the bulls-eye rash to get lymes, I never got one and my levels were high enough that it had to be reported to the center of disease control or CDC. I also have to add this was after my test at the local clinic came back negative and I had the igenics test come back positive with those high levels. Some times I think it's a medical cover up or they just don't know what to do. Most MD's will just give you 7-10 days of antibiotics and call it good wich is great if you have just been bitten but if it's been awhile you need more.

And eyehunter I know the feeling I got home from work today and layed down on the couch sore in every joint in the body and sharp stabbing pains in the chest.

on the hunting dog thread i talked about having a deer tick on me which i know was there for less than 24 hours and i went to the doc and he dug the head out and gave me a couple of antibiotic pills and everything went away within a day. today i found another one on me and i took it off with the head this time not in my skin. i just put some anibiotic on the spot and put a bandaid on it.

i have lived here 18 years and never had a deer tick on me. the average tick you can usualy feel crawl on you before they actualy penetrate the skin. these deer ticks i did not feel at all. one on my arm and the other on the side of my chest. so be carefull out there and check yourself over. i'm going to get me some of the stuff mentioned above in a previous post. the odd thing is i was hardly on the grass at all and not even in our woods. good luck.
