Plastics require you to dial in the presentation. Color, weight, size, line size, etc usually need to be just perfect to get on a good bite. That requires practice and experience to figure out what should be changed, and it continuously changes throughout the day. Just because you throw some piece of plastic you find in the tackle box doesn't mean you will be catching fish left and right like on TV. There is a reason pros carry a hundred different colors in the boat with them.

It might have something to do with the way working the plastic. The next time you see some guy hammering fish with plastics, why not just tell him you are having trouble catching fish when you use them and ask for some help. If he has a good bite going he is likely to be in a good mood and will help you out. Most the guys I know including me have no problem with helping someone with learning more about a technique.

I almost never bring live bait with me anymore. I keep a couple jars of Gulp! Alive in my boat and might tip my plastics with those, but almost never any waxies or minnows. I don't like watch a bobber and wait for a bite --- I'm almost always moving, retrieving, twitching, etc. Plastics work great for that!

gotta love some plastic if fished right you can triple your catch rate. and not waste time fumblin with putting on a new minnow every fish... you have to fish it to a T though. I have surprised guys in the group with what plastic's this winter I was using gulp alive and a very good fisherman said it been tough on plastic's this winter and I had no problems catching fish with it the time I went out.
