Ford Motor company and Bill Gates!

Recommended Posts

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,

“If Ford had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.”

In response to Bill's comments, Ford issued a press release stating:

If Ford had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash………Twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. And For some reason you would simply accept this as a way of life.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive – but would run on only 5% of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single “This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation” warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask “Are you sure?” before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the “Start” button to turn the engine OFF.

11. When all else fails, you could call “customer service” in some foreign country and be instructed in broken English on how to fix your car yourself!

Please share this with your friends who love - but sometimes hate - their computer!

Too Funny!! Gates is a donkey outside of software engineering. Oh wait, 30 years later their software has the same probablems!!

I would say Windows has come a long way in 30 years smile

Windows 7 is the best operation system out there! I have never even had my computer freeze once, and I use it for video editing, photography, lesson planning, and gaming. I have a $400 year and a half old black Friday Toshiba. Anyone who hasn't experienced Windows 7, needs to! Especially if you do any type of hard work on your machine.

My PC states on the side,

"Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium"

Been running it for 3 months and it's only froze up once!!!

My wife has it on her laptop and in 4 months hers has only froze up twice!!!

7 is decent but it could be better...

Google Bill Gates and Ford and you'll see his "last day at work" video were he drives away in a 08 Ford Focus 2dr.

I've been running Windows 7 for about 6 months now. Haven't had it freeze up a single time. And there are many occasions where I have 15 internet tabs open and about 8 other programs. Some requiring lots of juice (cad/cam). The new computer has lots of power though. Maybe that makes more of a difference than the OS?

The response from Ford to Mr. Gate's comments is absolutely beautiful and my guess is that Gate's got as big a kick out of it as the rest of us.

I think it's a marvelous piece of writing and a delightful put-down or Mr. Gates.

And I don't understand all the "crashing computer" comment. My little Toshiba Satellite loaded with 64-Vista has been running for more than a year, many hours every day, and it has never locked up, stopped, crashed, shut down or hesitated.

I must be doing something wrong!

Ha!

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
