DAD-N-EYE
I bought a champion 191 with a 200efi merc. Took it out the other day for a cruise and the best speed I could get out of it with 3 people in the boat (to try and simulate full tank of gas and gear) was 58 with the 4 blade 24p prop, with the rpms right at 6000. Tried it again a couple day later with a 3 blade 25p. Got the same to end and the rpms were more around 5750. Tried a 27p 3bld and also got the same speed but only 5500 rpms. When i tried it solo i got 66 with the wind and 59 against. So im guessing the 27p is too much with that great of a difference in speed. Im wondering if any of you guys have or know people with the same boat and what speed you're getting out of it.
mww24
I don't know anything about champion boats. There is a HSOforum where they have a champion forum with a ton of knowledgeable people. The URL is what type of boat you have "central".com. I cant post links so hope you can figure it out.
Larson15
There are a number of things you can do in your situation. First off, do not run that motor above 5800 rpms or you will end up blowing a piston. Do you have a jackplate on the boat? If so do you know your prop to pad measurements? I would set the motor 3.5" below pad and a 25p tempest with 2 plugs removed should do the trick.
Deitz Dittrich
I'm with larson on this.. sounds like it could be a motor height issue?.. what is water pressure and how higha rooster tail is it throwing at WOT?

Or did Dad keep the Nitro?
DAD-N-EYE
is that 3 1/2 inches to the center of prop shaft?
Larson15
This is how I take my measurement:1. Take a 3-4 foot level and level the hull on the trailer. I put the level on the bottom of the hull and use the jack to level the boat.2. Level the motor after leveling the hull. I usually take the prop off and put a 8" level on the prop shaft. This will be the most accurate. (There are a number of other ways you can level your motor as well).3. Measure from the ground to the bottom of the hull and write that measurement down.4. Measure from the ground to the center of the prop shaft and write it down.5. Take your bottom of the hull measurement and subtract the prop shaft measurement from it and that will give you your prop to pad measurement.Hope this helps. hydrashack
Go to bassboatcentral, go the the Champion board and ask Pat Goff. He is a legend at setting up Champions. He will tell you exactly where to set the prop to pad and what prop to run. They also have a setups page to help out too. 3.5 below the pad with a good trophy would be the place to start though. Todd S.
I had a 2000 191 DC Elite with a 200 Optimax, I ran a 25 pitch tempest, boat ran 68 mph on gps at 5800 rpm's. I did play with the height quite a bit with the manual jack plate, rooster tail was just about as high as the top of the motor.
DAD-N-EYE
Well I tried her again tonight with the 25p yamaha prop and got 66mph at 6050rpms with me and one other guy in the boat and got 68mph at 6200rpms solo. Do any of you guys know if a tempest will run a little lower on the rpms or about the same? I kinda wanna know before I spend the money on one. Thanks,Tracey
Larson15
It sounds like you are running the motor too high. Have you measured to see what your prop to pad measurement is? Those RPM's are way to high, you need to be running 5700-5800 max. I asked my buddy who runs this setup and he runs the 25 tempest 3.5" below pad. I think if you drop that motor down on the transom or jackplate you will lower the rpm's to where they need to be and you will probably pick up some speed as well. Superduty
If water pressure is OK at that height, I would leave the motor where it is and go to a bigger prop. How is the hole shot? If hole shot and water pressure are good, you have plenty of room in the RPM range to go up a size in pitch. You definitely need to stop running that motor above the recommended RPM range. hydrashack
Dad-n-eye I saw your post of bass boat central. Listen to what Pat Goff says. He was a demo driver for Champion boats for like 20 years. He knows and has tried every boat and motor combo that Champion made from early 80s to 2000ish, he will be able to eliminate the learning curve on getting one set up. DAD-N-EYE
Ya Im going to remeasure all the gap again and start at from square one at 3.5 and see what it does. But my water pressure is good and the whole shot is good too.
Todd S.
Dad-n-Eye,For what its worth on a merc prop vs a yamaha prop, it's been my experience with 3 different yamaha/bass boat rigs over the years that the merc props run better on their motors than the yamaha props. Keeping those RPM's in range is critiacal, you don't want to over spin that wheel!
