6.0 fuel mileage?

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a crew cab chevy and i found a pretty good deal on a 2006 chevrolet HD 6.0 1500. I am wondering how much worse the mileage will be with a 6.0 vs 5.3. He claims that because it is not a 3/4 ton it is a 1500 that the gearing is diffrent and the mileage will only be 2mpg. worse with the 6.0. Is this [PoorWordUsage]? What is a realistic minimum and max mpg?

I've got a '05 3/4 ton with the 6.0 and have never been in the 16's, 15+ in the very best of conditions driving highway and not freeway speeds. I believe the 1/2 is the 3.73 and 3/4 is 4.10, that should help out mileage a little, but she'll be expensive to drive one, that's for sure.

The 1500 HD is 3/4 ton truck(check the GVWR - it is 8600 lbs. - anything over 8500 lbs. is considered a commercial duty vehicle; the 2500 HD has a GVWR of 9200 lbs). The frame, transmission, axles all are different from the light duty 1500's. It is a much more capable truck than a regular 1500.

I had a 6.0 in a 2500 Chevy - I got between 12 and 14 mpg. Fantastic engine, though.

My dad had a 2006 GMC 1500 H.D with a 6.0 and the best he did was 12mph. He did town driving, hwy and hauled a trailer hunting a few weekends a year. He didn't use the truck to his potential enough cause it still got 12 no matter if you were hauling something behind or not. I loved the truck when we went on trips hauling the boat cause his truck would get better milage then my smaller 5.3. I have at 2010 GMC and it will get ave of 16(general) but as good as 18 to 21 on longer drives and hauling boat or stuff anywhere from 8 to 13 at best. I put on lots of miles with my truck but I would love to have the 6.0 if I didn't drive as much.

My 6.0 in my 2500hd gets at best 13.5 on the hwy, trailering around 9-10. I know lots of guys with 1/2 ton 5.3 and suburban 5.3 that get between 18-21 on the hwy, so the guy is full of [PoorWordUsage] telling you it's only 2mpg different. The 6.0 is a really strong engine, but not great on gas.

I have an 03 Silverado HD1500 w/6.0 120m and average is 11.2 around town 14 Hwy. Towing heavy loads (28ft Sportcraft) 10 mpg

@ 4 bucks a gallon get a 5.3 unless your buying a truck to tow something.

I have never had any serious problems with my 6.0 great engine!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
