My brother was out on saturday taking pictures and heard alot of gobbling on the roost. He said once they got on the ground they quit. There was 4 Toms in the group that followed the hens. I think they are just starting to break up from what I have been seeing.

I camped Friday night with my son in the zone I'll be hunting this spring. I was hoping to get a sense for if/where the turkeys live there. I woke up early Saturday morning to the sounds of an owl and hens making a ruckus up on the hill above the camp. Then the toms started gobbling away. I was hoping to sleep in!

Went out this morning to start the truck, closed the door and it sounded like 2 different toms gobbling away across the street. Its so nice living 200 yards away from the dinner table. grin

I wish I could wake up tomorrow and have it be the 27th!!

Had a tom in full strut following 4 hens yesterday up by my place. I got him to gobble a couple of times by just using my voice to yelp like a hen. First one I've seen or heard this year. Really gets the blood pumping to get out after them!

Finally got my tail out of bed early enough this morning and yeah there were gobbles in the distance. Haven't seen any flocks in the fields or heard any daytime gobbling. All leads me to believe they are right on schedule as far as breeding goes. Winter flocks have broken, toms gobble from the roost already with hens with no need to gobble on the ground. Those hens will leave to start nests in the next week or so further distributing the toms and enticing a peak of gobbling as they look for new hens. It'll be fun!

Got my first bird of the year yesterday...Saw a squad at the side of the road with its lights flashing. As I went by a jake could be seen in front of the car. I turned around and parked behind the squad just as the officer gal was trying to rap it on the head with the little bead on the end of her extending baton. I yelled "step on its neck!" Then I discretely dispatched it for her while asking, "can I get a permit for that?" It cleaned up nicely, broken wing and hip.

Good find! smile

Been seeing a few more birds getting into the normal spring areas as the snow fades. We might not be too far off schedule when season opens.

I have yet to see a strutter or hear a gobble but I've leaving pretty early for the past couple weeks.
