Trout Sushi?

I'm with you on this one JW. Clearly there are a few people very proud of themselves for knowing the subtle differences in serving raw fish. We're happy for them. Finally....after all these years of waiting for an opportunity to display this nugget of knowledge, they got their chance! Awesome. :-)

If you call the difference between the words "burger" and "steak" subtle, then I suppose you could call the difference between "sushi" and "sashimi" subtle.

It's not even a subtle difference between "raw fish". It's the subtle difference between RICE and seafood.

and what exactly is wrong with not knowing the subtle differnce? Maybe sushi bars should start giving out mandatory tests before they allow you to come into their restraurant if it is such a big deal

Theres no need to get your undies in a bunch over [apparently] inferior people calling sashimi sushi or visa versa. If I eat a piece of fish that is wrapped around rice, it is really no different than eating just a piece of raw fish in the grand scheme of things, and its pretty commical you get so worked up over what people call it. Maybe they are just doing it to push your buttons grin

Make sure you guys all give yourself a big pat on the back. Clearly this is valuable information to know that gets you extremely far in life

Now...now now JW. My undies get in a knot when I see a guy say "Hey, look at that Ford truck." and it is clearly a Chevy truck. Or I ask for six cold beers and the guy gives me eight tubs of butter.

And if someday the guys asks "You wanna be shot at sunrise or sunset?"...I sure he understands the difference because if might mean another 12 hours for my clemency to come through!

Let's all remain calm...nobody will remember much of this in three days but many people WILL know the distinction between the three.

And THAT was much of my point.

Sit back. Life is shorter than you think.

glad your undies aren't getting bunched. No need for people to talk down on others for not knowing the differences between them and thats what I was getting at.

nobody will remember much of this in three days but many people WILL know the distinction between the three.

I'm going to keep calling every type of raw fish sushi, just to push peoples buttons grin

Come on man...you've got to get over yourself. This is a fishing forum - not finishing school. For the average Joe, eating raw fish = sushi. And to your attempted comparison of "burger" and "steak", I offer you "Salsbury Steak". Seriously! I'd expect this conversation on the Martha Stewart HSOforum - not here. :-)

There goes the neighborhood guys!

Once the first musky guy shows up, its all downhill from there.... Now we hear mention of that trout expert Martha Stewart - and before you know it someone will utter the word "bass".

Oh the humanity!

Boy, try and shed some light on a couple things and everyone goes crazy grin

How about this comparison........I catch a bunch of fish on Pool 4, come into the walleye forum and post my pictures and proclaim I caught a bunch walleye. One of you walleye experts chimes in that they are clearly sauger. I continue to call them walleye, irritating many of you experts and you politely point out the differences between walleye and sauger, maybe you even post a few pictures to help me out.

People come to this site for information, the original poster clearly asked a question and many people answered it correctly and added some more thoughts on the subject, IMO that is what we are all here for.

My undies are not in a bunch and no one is calling people out, just pointing out some small errors so everyone is on the same page.

Toro is by far my favorite sashimi, maybe we should start a topic to discuss our favorites whistle

Just a couple of comments. I'm not so sure that sushi/sashimi grade fish is never frozen. I think the large bluefin tuna are often flash frozen before showing up in market where they are bidden on and bought for the raw fish trade.

I worked in Alaska on the Yukon/Kuskokwim Delta and several guys from the local village were helping us out. We were breaking up camp and were very low on food when they came to pick us and our gear up at the end of the season. We were all a bit hungry and the canned stew (in minimal quantity) didn't do much for them. In the eddy by their boat, anchored against the bank, they noticed a school of sticklebacks. "Food" was what we heard as they rounded up netting and some lath and seined a bunch of 2-3 inch fish. "How do you eat those?" I naively asked as they proceeded to scoop and eat the fish with their hands. "Fresh!" they laughed at me. We ate some too--had Ritz cracker hors d'ouevres. They weren't bad. Tasted a bit like watermelon. Asked one of the women we worked with if she wanted some too. "You're cooking them aren't you?" We weren't. She'd worked in a freshwater fish pathology lab and shuddered. Freshwater fish carry some unpleasant parasites.

We ate a few different things that summer with those guys. It was all either fresh or boiled.

I like the texture of raw fish. The taste is very subtle, so taste isn't the major appeal for me, but I enjoy sashimi and sushi. Roe is great. Caviar is great. I can't properly digest onions, so I've only picked out bites of ceviche, but it was good too.

This winter, I was staying with some relatives in Fort Myers. Their property has oysters piled all around their dock. I pulled a pocket knife and ate a dozen live oysters straight from the sea. They thought I was going to die. No trouble.

I've eaten pieces of raw trout and salmon I caught in Superior and have had no trouble.

Last summer, i found my new favorite. Lox!

Place raw trout in your refrigerator for 3 days with a lot of salt, sugar and dill. Flip the fillets once daily. On day 3, rinse and slice thin. Eat it on water crackers with cream cheese.

I may never cook a trout again.

I worry about parasites in pork, chicken and turkey. Fish haven't hurt me yet.

That said, everything that comes up when you search "sushi grade requirements" or "sashimi grade requirements" points to freezing to kill bacteria.

Anisakis, Diphyllobothrium, Nanophyetus, Eustrongylides.

Look them up. I dare ya'.

I would not eat a fish raw unless it has been frozen at -4 deg F for 168 hours or -31 deg. F for 15 hours. Freezing is for parasite destruction.

Sushi grade is just a industry term. It does not mean it is safe to eat raw. And one should not assume it is safe.

I would be happy to answer any ones questions about eating raw fish or food safety.

Good Grief Pickaxe....ya bout gagged me just with the names of those terrible sounding maladies.

I have no doubt you are correct. There certainly IS a risk involved. To some people it is a part of life and perhaps if they contracted something awful from eating raw fish they would swear off forever.

II reckon I'll keep rolling the dice.

Are you nutz!!?? Freeze fish and then use if for sashimi? Hahahahahaha. The object is nice FRESH fish!

Summa you guys don't know nuttin'!!!

Better check state law in minnesota

Fish Intended for Raw Consumption:

Must be obtained from a supplier that freezes fish,

or fish must be frozen on premises according to

regulations.

https://www.revisor.mn.gov/rules/?id=4626.0350

So if you go to a sushi joint you are getting previously frozen fish, except for tuna.
