fireline question

Recommended Posts

i just bought some fireline to try on my open water poles i used fireline on my ice poles and noticed if i went straight to the spool the line would just spin when i put pressure on the line or caught a fish so it was basically useless so i was wondering if i needed to tie some mono on the spool first or if this wouldnt be an issue in the warmer weather

I always use a backer on my spools, usually filling up about 1/2 the capacity. It solves the problem of the synthetic braid slipping and cuts the cost of the $$ braid line drastically. The next time you change line look at how much line was never off of the spool.

I simply use a loop on the end, then loop back through the loop so the resulting loop can tighten itself. Put this around the arbor of the reel in a way that it tightens as you pull on the line (so it pulls back on itself).

Then, make sure there is plenty of tension on the spool when you reel it on. Otherwise, your line can bite into itself under load. I've spooled 5+ set ups this way and I've never had a problem with my line spinning on my arbor when using this method.

tie to spool then tape.

That's what I've been doing for years. Wrap the fireline around the spool 3 or 4 times tight and make a knot. Put some electricians tape over the knot to make sure it's secure. Then spool as normal.

Use backer! I have never had slippage and when you use a backer it fills the spool farther so you get the maximum performance of the reel a underspolled reel will not perform to it max performance unless the reel is filled to its recomended level.
