Season A ?

It depends on what you mean by too early. With weather varying slightly year to year there is never one season that is the ideal hunting period.

I've had snow in season D the last week of April and that ruined my week. Of course I know more now and could've probably hunted harder.

You just need to know the patterns of the birds during the time of year you're hunting. That's where scouting comes in.

Many people like season A because the birds are less exposed to people than season H.

The biggest problem with the earlier seasons is the chance that many birds are still in flocks. It's hard to call a tom away from 4-8 real hens. Later in the season, some of those hens are already sitting on their nests so there is less competion from the real thing.

That being said, season A usually has the highest % of kills per hunters of any of the seasons. There is really no "too early" or "too late", just different hunting methods for different phases of the spring breeding season.

There are times when you ask whether "A" season is too early. Then again when hunting G season last year I had a flock of 15 hens without a tom late in the morning. So I guess you just never know when they'll be flocked up. wink

Last year I got drawn for Season B and I almost thought it was too late but still got my turkey right away. We'll see what happens this year when I have to go the last two weekends since I didn't get drawn.

I've come to learn that most new turkey hunters favor the earlier seasons to get the first crack at the birds - and maybe out of being anxious. Plus there's more birds. I agree the success rate is usually higher in the early seasons given the weather doesn't shut a season out but according to info from respected sources, there are a lot of jakes shot early.

This all makes sense when you talk about flocked up birds. The toms know where their bread is buttered and stick to the hens. Jakes will break off the flock more readily and take a chance at finding an unseen girl friend.

I remember my early turkey years and hunting those early seasons. Sometimes it was dang cold and miserable. But we did have first dibs.
