Strikemaster recoil repair

Powerstroke

Question

My recoil rope untied and came out of the recoil housing. All I need to do is get in there and put a new knot on it and wind it back up but I can't figure out how to get the recoil cover off.

Can some explain or show me where I can find the repair procedure?

I just had to replace the recoil on my Mag 2000.

Remove the 2 screws that hold on the air intake. Remove air intake and filter. Remvoe the 2 nuts that hold fuel tank to carb. Keep fuel line attached. On top of recoil cover there are 4 screws that hold on the recoil cover. One of these screws also holds the fuel tank. Remove all 4 of these. Gently pry the recoil cover off.

Voila, cover is off and recoil is exposed. DO NOT REMOVE THE SPRING or you will have some work ahead of you.

Re-tie your knot. Re-attach everything in reverse order. Hit the lake, rope it, drop a line, crack a beverage, and enjoy!!!

If it's not a Mag 2000 I have no idea.

I suppose that information would be important. LOL

Its a Lazermag express with the 2hp tecumseh. There are two bolts and a nut on the top of the cover. I wasn't aware I would have to go through the air cleaner setup. Hmm.

I'll try that tonight, if that doesn't work I will call them.

You do not have to take the other stuff off i just replaced my whole recoil cover take the 2 bolts or nuts off then the nut that holds the gas tank then pry the tank back a little bit and take the other nut off then pull the cover off . strikemaster does not fix or have parts for the older models they will send you to d-rock which will take good care of you my recoil cover broke the peg which holds the recoil to the cover 2 days later had new cover shipped to my door for a fair price..

My spring's removed - now what??? grin

Started my 5-6 yr old Lazer Mag Sat morning to let it warm up before heading to the lake. Ran for a few seconds, died and the recoil sucked up the handle TIGHT. Couldn't budge it. Tore it apart last night hoping it was the recoil and not a seized piston or something. After taking the cover off, the recoil spring had become unravelled. At least I was smart enough not to put my face up close as I was pulling it out. smile Obviouisly something went wrong for this to occur, but can I rewind it and call it good or are new parts required? I tried to coil it back up for 15 minutes last night... didn't go so well. grin

Quite honestly, I've rewound a LOT of recoil springs with no problem.

Having said that, I spent well over an hour trying to re-wind my strikemaster recoil spring before I came to the conclusion that's I'm a dork for even trying. The little bent tab on the end keeps breaking and if you try to bend in a new tab, it will break, and so on and so on and so on.

New spring kit over the net costs right around 20 bucks. Slides right in, takes aboot a whopping 30 seconds. When I ordered mine the new one was there the next day.

Going to try the nail and ziptie trick tonight. If that don't work, I'll have to order a new one! This one is tough because it's built right into the cover.

Anyone know the Tecumseh part number for a new one? Having a hard time finding much info on the net. Does SM in Big Lake still sell the kits? Saw the sign was covered up last drive I drove by.

SM is no longer in Big Lake after the Rapala etc buyout. They still list a place called H2 or something in Big Lake as being a master repair shop. Otherwise Drock in Fridley is still the place to go.

I had my recoil repaired last year and it did the same thing again. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with mine right now. I want to get is fixed, but not sure if it will be worth it during this season. I might wait and pay off-season labor prices.

Well, I got the spring rewound and installed, and in timely fashion I must add! But the plastic shroud that sits on top of that has a lot of play in it and wants to slip down causing recoil failure. Does a spring sit between the flywheel and the shroud that the dogs attach to? It's way too loose in there. Hoping I could've repaired it myself, but it looks like it'll be going to the shop. Bringing it to H2 Outfitter Marine tonight. $18 for a repair kit. I need to get back on the ice!

Thanks FishStu - my email is matts at hharchery dot com

How are the recoils on the Solo's? I know initially guys were having issues w/ too much grease in there, but what about since?

NO issues with the recoil on my Solo at all, going on it's 4th season.

Powerstroke, StrikeMaster is right in the cities and not that far from you. You can walk in with the auger and if they are not swamped, they will fix it while you wait.

I went there a month ago to have my pitched checked and also got a new bungee for the cover and a smaller part and there was no charge.

They have a good CS department and the guys working were very helpful and quick.

I had a part break in my mag 2000 one time, it was the black piece that engages the flywheel when you pull start. Got a new one, and a spare as well. Never broke again. I tried SM a few weeks ago for a gasket kit, and no answer. Ended up calling a Tacumsa dealer listed in the back of the manuel, they were in anoka about a mile from me....convenient. I don't know if you opened it to see if thats the problem, but I haven't read all the previous posts on this topic. Try any tacumsa dealer. I'm gonna fish down in wright county tonight, but if I find mine, and your around I'll meet ya and give it to you if you need it. Got the Jiff Propane now, still gonna overhaul my mag 2000.

I was just in at H2O a couple of weeks ago to get my recoil repaired. They recommended a kit that has an improved, deeper engagement lug on the plastic spool. They did it while I waited.

A little background, 12 yo auger, seem to have problems with it every trip, but keepin her going. This time the throttle froze wide open, first hole drilled out very fast, like day one. The next hole, auger going wide open, caught cutting through the bottom of the ice and slipped out of my hands. So my auger is going max speed standing up in the hole. Hoping no one is watching. After 15 seconds or so, the auger breaks through the ice and the motor is just spinning on top of the ice. The auger now is pulling up water totally engulfing the motor with a boil of water. I could hear the exhuast bubbling away and the intake sputtering. Needless to say we had to borrow an auger for the remaining holes.

I did mine a couple weeks ago after pulling it out the first 2 minutes at the lake. The best advice I can give is coil the spring by hand. Hold it with one hand and pull the end to tighten it. Keep doing this until you have a coil smaller that your housing it sits it. It took me 2 tries with this method (after failing at many others for 3 hours).

The best trick I can recommend for recoiling the spring is to pound a nail halfway into a board, attach the outter end of the spring on it, place your plastic pulley that the coil surrounds in the center and start turning counter-clockwise. There's a youtube video on it. Takes just a few minutes.

The problem on mine was the built-in post on the blower housing (top case) was sheared off. It was so clean I didn't even know there was a post there. (Always use the yellow decompression button! smile ) When I recoiled the spring and put everthing back together, I noticed the extra play in there and had to bring it in. Had to buy a used top case and recoil kit and now I'm ready to hit the ice. The service at H2 Outfitters in Big Lake is outstanding. Sure is nice to have a quality service shop close to home!
