Last night as I was driving home I thought I heard on Bear facts & fish tales that there is a ban on eating smallies because of some disease. Does anyone know what I am talking about??

Please be careful everyone. This is a serious new disease. It has just started to become widespread across most of the lakes in Minnesota. Scientists and media have nicknamed the disease "smallie pox" because of its similarity to the common small pox virus. The disease affects the nervous system of anyone harvesting smallmouth bass from infected waters. The symtoms include dizziness, nausea, outbreaks of itchy red bumps, and an uncontrollable feeling of guilt.

I eat Bass, both smallies and Largemouth, but only those caught early season, anything after July 1st or earlier depending on the weather conditions, (meaning what the temp is )goes back,if we have an unusually hot spring then I might not keep any after June 15th, if it stays cold like this year, July 1st is my cut-off date.

I also eat bass. I like to cook them up with some eye's and feed them to people who get mad about keeping bass. You know the sort who complain that bass taste like swamp water. Done it many times, never had anyone tell the difference.

Fatrap I agree with you. I will keep just a couple of smaller bass for a meal. There is common sense in taking care of any species of fish that you are going to keep. Meaning from the lake to the live well to bringing it home. I have friends just like some of the posted responses that could never tell the differense between a northern, bass, or a bottom feeder. Their response all the time is "now that's fresh fish"

Why in the world does anybody want to eat bass, largemouth or smallmouth?
To me they are muddy tasting and taste like swamp water.
I can see if your starving and needed something to eat, but a bass?
Try sunfish or crappies which are abundent and easy to catch and clean and tastey!
Let them fish-fighten' machine of a fish go back to let someone else enjoy the tug on there pole and have some fun.
Just like eating walleyes over 20", they just don't taste good.
Just my .02 cents!
