ikeslayer
I am just wondering if anyone knows at what point fluoro and mono suffer any kind of wear at what cold temperature - I know if you store it in a cool dry place our to suns rays it will nearly last forever - but how cold it too cold? RK
Hiya - I think it's a brand to brand thing. I know I used fluoro into late October last year and it maybe got a little wiry but it was manageable. Using KVD L & L conditioner seemed to help? Actually though I've had worse luck with copoly being stiff in cold weather than either fluoro or pure mono.Cheers,Rob Kimm
Fever
I too use Flouro leaders in clear water. An 18 inch piece of flouro leader tied to a micro swivel to reduce line twists and unnatural spinning of a jigging spoon seems to help th catch for crappies, sunnies, and perch. I also use 8 lb flouro in the same way when fishing the river for Walleyes. I like that it is sensitive, clear, no stretch, and it sinks. I've never had a problem with it due to too cold conditions. I do find it quite usefull in these types of applications. I haven't however ever used it as my main line on a real so that might be different when its real cold. Sorry this prob doesn't answer the original question.
Larson15
I do know that fluro can withstand the colder temperatures better than mono due to the fact that it absorbs very little or no water whereas mono absorbs water. When a line absorbs water in cold temperatures it will make the line brittle and eventually break much easier. I have found that when fishing open water when the temp is below freezing mono and copoly really suffer. I have less problems with fluro below freezing. Flurocarbon becomes stiffer and weaker about 4 times slower than mono in cold temps. From doing some research I have found that fluro can withstand temps down to -15 and mono will break down at the freezing point.
Nick Kuhn
I've still got some liquid nitrogen here at work, and a machine that can do tensile testing. We can certainly find out what happens in the cold!

Nick Kuhn
If someone is willing to provide line samples. LN2 is probably a little cold for those materials. I could do -40 though.
Deitz Dittrich
Were you at Nick... I have line.. how long a sample would you need for testing? Why not shoot me an email and we can converse that way.. [email protected]

Nick Kuhn
Email sent. I really couldn't give a timetable for that test. It would depend on a few factors, most importantly machine availability.
