Arctic Armor Bibs

I got a full suit around Christmas time and have wore the bibs probably 15 days total. I just got home from a LOW & URL trip and since they were smelling pretty fishy I decided to wash them. I noticed on both legs that my boot buckles were ripping the fabric up pretty bad. Has anyone else noticed this or have made any mods? I was thinking about having my local seamstress put a more durable fabric sewn in. Just wanted to see if others have the same problems and what they did.

I didn't have same issues, but I did have that gaiter on the inside start to rip off some... I honestly haven't fixed it, and it only ripped (sewing came undone) on both legs, but only so far. It has been staying on for three years now, so it must have been bad ends or something, or maybe I just pull it hard so far and then ease up on it. Not sure.

I did have the inside of the jacket wear through... but that was because I think I laid the auger on it inside back of my truck for about 150 miles. I put red Duct tape on two years ago, and it has held! Then last week I burned a bit on front of jacket on the auger exhaust... doh... so I have been abusing it and it is still kicking along. Oh yeah, I did have some wear spots near the loop on inside of jacket.

I wore my AA bibs for I think 3 years or more without any issues with the buckles or straps. I never used them though so I just cut them off. If Im worried about snow or slush getting in my boots I just use the gators but that is like once a year if that.

I have had no wearing at all from boot latches. If your latches are that sharp I would get them fixed at a shoe shop.

I have had my AA suit since x-mas, I will say that if you are used to wearing carharts, you need to learn to be more carefull with these bibs. I have already had two rips, and two burns. Guess thats the price you pay for having such a lightweight outfit. Any recomedations for patching?

I bought my dad a set, and within a couple weeks both straps on the ankles tore off. Not a big deal because they aren't really necessary, but kind of annoying when you spend that much on a product.

As far as the buckles, I haven't seen that problem, but would a couple quick wraps of duct tape help? Might be a cheap solution.

No issues with the bibs on my AA, but I have closed loop lace eyelets on my boots. Only "complaint" I have is they are too warm sometimes, but a light shirt underneath usually does the trick.

I tried taking a few photos for you guys of the damages but since the interior is all black I couldn't get a photo to turn out. Each leg has about a dozen tears in the fabric. I think I'm going to have my seamstress to a little modification with something more tough. Thanks for all the replies.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
