The vertical showdown....

Any LCD is not real time, do the research as they cannot be per the technology. They are close but are not real time.

I have to laugh whenever I see some expert comment on this. No offense intended towards you joneshat11, you seem to be much more informed than others. However, this has been proven FALSE many, many times over. All the technology figures aside, The real world truth is any nanosecond delay, if any, is not discernable by the human eye.

The delay thing is just a gimmick that flasher manufacturer's can print on the side of the box and people will take it hook, line, and sinker.

Sure the showdown has got an added millisecond delay from the lcd. Your flasher does too, the sound wave has to come out of the transducer, down to where the fish is, and then back up to the transducer. Then the electronic signal has to go the spinny thing and the spinny thing has to spin around at whatever rpm it is doing so. Then the light has to travel across the shack to your retinas and your brain has to process it --- in other words it isn't real time and if you want to get technical nothing you see is real time. Compare them side by side and tell me you can see a difference. I have, and I can't.

It's the same thing as 1.21 jigawatts of power or 4.27 angstrom target separation --- they are 99% marketing gimmicks.

My wife has the showdown troller. Works well for her and I like it for a quick depth check while drilling holes. It will also come in handy in the boundary waters. Just don't touch the bottom of the transducer with a wet hand. I think they use those things at Guantanamo when waterboarding doesn't work.

Not sure if that's normal, but that's the way that it works.

Bobby's got this pegged. Human perception is the slowest link in the chain.

Part of the problem is humans have a dual pathway in our vision - one mode travels faster than the other. Flickers and flashes are perceived differently by all of us, some folks see things others don't due to wave coherence between the two pathways.

I've been a vexilar user for over 20 years and have used the showdown many times. The delay was my experience. I had bites before the showdown could show the fish even with my jig. Had the same experience using the Lowrance. Grew, frustrated with the product therefore I have my comments provided about the product that are also formed from facts of the technology. I also know many others who have had the same experiences with the delay of the bite. If you guys don't have the same experience I cannot say, but the delay is there.

Never had a delay. I watch fish come up from the bottom and hit my jig. The feel was at the same time. I've been using the 5.6 for two years now. I drive a Ford too. But have heard from others that Chevy's are better. wink

Hey Jones that is good information Thanks for looking it up and i do not dispute what your saying. I agree the LED may have a faster cycle rate as your saying. I own a vexilar as well as my showdown and in my experience using the showdown i cannot decipher a lag in time from what is happening below and what is happening with me up top. if i raise and lower my jig it moves on my showdown screen up and down the same as my motion with the rod. when a fish comes in the screen and moves to my bait i get the reactive strike on my rod at the same time it reaches my bait or jig on the screen. It is my personal experience. My display is also heated so on cold days the screen stay warm so the screen itself wont slow down. I think in the past you are 100% correct the screen would get cold and not react as fast but i think the sonar readings are real time. with the ability to warm the screen i think in my opinion that any lag issues are a thing of the past. Hey one more thing Jones i see your in Big Lake your not far from me maybe we could meet up on the ice some time and we could compare notes and wet a line together. Let me know i fish some of the local lakes.

I bought a showdown dual beam 2 wks ago, used it once. I brought it up to lake of the woods this weekend and it didn't work. The battery was charged, fuse good and everything was connected. I tried everything I could but no go. I did get it turn on once or twice in the cabin but never on the ice. This pile is going back wouldn't recommend it. To bad I sold my vexilar, now I have to buy a new one.

They must of edited my story. I just bought the showdown 2 weeks ago and sold my fl 18 to buy it. I used it once before going to lake of the woods, got up there and it wouldn't turn on. I checked the battery, the fuse, all the power connections and still nothing. I brought it back to the cabin and it turned on once or twice. I am returning the unit and buying a vexilar.

hey fishhunt marcum has outstanding customer service if you let them know your having a problem mostlikely they would fix it for free or just give you a new unit free of charge. Id give them a chance cause once your able to use it i think you will be very happy.

Had a buddy purchase a brand new showdown and charged it on the way to LOW. Got up there and it wouldn't turn on. The tech support line was excellent in returning a left voice mail but the unit was just a lemon and wouldn't turn on. Before going out to the sleeper house we had to make a swing into the outdoor store just outside of Warroad to purchase a replacement. The shop outside Warroad BTW is top notch. Great store, good prices on gear and tackle and great staff.

Got mine on saturday and love it. Never used electronics before and after about 30 minutes I had it dialed in. Awesome to see the fish come up to hit your jig. Wonder how many fish I have missed not using anything like that.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
