Garage door opener

Maybe its just the cold weather, but my garage door opener has been a pain in my arse. We can't close it with the remotes, but we can open it with the remotes. We can only close it with the wired button, and when I use the wired button I have to hold it all the way until its down. I have taken the belt off the opener thinking maybe it was a tension problem, but that made no difference. I have unattached the garage door also, and it makes no difference. I have adjusted the open/close force and that makes no difference either. Any advice from any of you garage door experts..?

Have you tried standing right underneath it with the remote opener in hand when closed to see if you can hear it or watch to see if it actuates? It maybe time for some new batteries in them? confused

Interesting that has a belt drive. Is it a Raynor brand or Liftmaster?

If the photo eyes are not working or are out of alignment, usually the lights will flash when you try to close it with the remotes.

Holding the wall button down will override the photo eyes, but it won't override a stuck down limit switch,a force issue,or a bad circuit board.

I'll put my money on the photo eyes as well.

If it is a Chamberlin or Liftmaster I am sure it is the electric eye. With the cold or even snow load on the garage roof it will change the alignment of the eyes. I go through this every year with my opener. If you adjust it now you wiil have to tweak it a little when the ground thaws.

No matter the brand,it will not close if the photo cells are disconnected or removed. There is a chip in one of them that sends a signal to the main circuit board telling it if it sees the other eye,or if it's blocked.

If the lock button was activated the remotes wouldn't work period, because that locks them out.

What brand is it?

Genie models have an infrared pick up sensor on the top side of the motor that is connected to the motor shaft. The sensor tells the other electronics that the motor is turning. As the opener ages, it develops enough play in the motor for the sensor to move out of limit and not sense that the motor is turning. I have the Genie screw drive model with a lifetime warranty and they had no problem replacing the power head. Problem solved.
