Insuring a Wheel House? Companies?

Recommended Posts

Starting to get quotes on insurance for a wheel house. Finding some to be higher than I was expecting, and also quite a range of whats covered. What are some of the companies others are using, what are the rates, and what does it cover?

Just trying to get a broader view of price range and I what I should be expecting to get for that $. I know some have said it includes recovery and repair/replacement if you'd bust through and sink it, others have said it doesnt include that, just things like theft. others have said they include some things, but any theft of personal property would need to go on home owners insurance, others carried a rider for personal belongings.

Not quite as easy as getting auto quotes, or even boat or atv policies. Seems like many of the agents I've talked to dont know if they even write policies on fish houses.

You need a stand alone Wheelhouse policy similar to a stand alone travel trailer policy. I am a licensed independent insurance agent, and represent dozens of companies. I do have one company that specializes in this. You don't want your wheelhouse policy attached to your homeowners policy. If you have a claim on your wheelhouse it will affect your homeowners policy.

If you have any questions just email me [email protected]

I know I dont want it tied to my homeowners. I also dont want it tied to my auto policy, which I'm finding is what a lot of companies do.

Kind of why I was asking, hoping to get names of companies that provide what I am looking for to narrow down the field of places I call for quotes. Getting old spending 1/2 hour on the phone trying to explain what I'm looking for only to find out they either dont write on fish houses at all, or else have policies tied to homeowners or auto that I'm not looking for.

I just paid my wheelhouse ins on Tuesday. Here is what I have. I have it insured for 12,500 replacement cost coverage with a $500 deductible on a stand alone policy. It cost me $125 per year to insure it. I am covered if it is vandalized, goes through the ice, gets hit on the road, or stole. The ONLY thing I am not covered for is the cost to get the house back out of the lake if it sinks. If it is totaled though, they will pay for that. I got mine through State Farm in Hutchinson. Agents name is Kim. It only took me a couple minutes and some pictures to get everything done.

I have AM fam.

I got a 0 deductable policy so it was a little more. It covers going thru the ice recovery and damage. It is insured for 7500.00 and I think it was 1500 for items inside. Cover the standard theft, fire, accident. It is about $23/month.

So is your policy through AmFam tied into your auto policy? I have my boat and atv's insured through them but have my auto policy through another company because AmFam couldnt come close to what the other companies rate was. My agent at AmFam told me they couldnt write a stand alone policy it had to be tied into the auto policy. Something having to do with the liability factor when towing. Which didnt make a lot of sense to me as they wrote a stand alone policy on my boat, which is also towed with the same truck.

Peterson999 I will shoot you an email! Thanks

Pike Doctor, you are going to want to double check on weather or not it is replacement cost. I know State Farm pretty well and I have only seen ACV fish house policies i.e, in a total loss, you will get the value of a "like kind and quality/age" fish house at that time. $125 is a great price though..

CM, Full coverage on a wheel house shouldn't cost more than $150-$200 year and there are companies out there that don't care if it is homemade or a namebrand. there are a ton of good companies out there and it is a good idea to keep it seperate from your home owners. And with some companies, you can put emergancy roadside service and full glass coverage on there too.

Pike Doctor, I just called a really good friend of mine that is a State Farm agent and I am an American Family Agent and he said that State Farm does not have a replacement cost polciy on a Fishouse.. maybe if it is less than 6 months old, they would get you the value of a new one, but even that would be up to the adjuster..

I do have auto and home with them but they never said anything about it having to be tied to the auto so I guess I am not sure. It is listed among the other things on my auto statement so it may be tied to it.

10,000 casts: I could have paid a fair amount less if I hadn't opted for 0 ded and the 1500 for items inside. Those two seemed to make it increase quite a bit in cost but I felt I wanted it.

I have mine thru state farm also but I know ours is under a Recreational Vehichle policy (RV) because it is used in the summer as well as the winter. How ever I dont know the details of the policy...i guess I should look into that. I have an ultimate lodge and i think they get $300 per year or something but that has $5000 personal property protection attached as well.

Quite often the insurance provider wants a stated value. This will be how they base premiums. In the event of a total loss good luck getting that "value". It's only a number used to base a premium. As the years go by they depreciate it's value more and more.

Say we state a value of $25K on a $12K fish house. They will insure you but at the time of loss they will look up comparables.

Am Fam? I'm in the process of dropping everything with them. Going back to Auto Owners. $700 hike for one house and $350 for the other.

I have my '08 Grand Lodge insured with American Family. Full coverage, $500 deductible. Costs me $158 per year. It's on it's own seperate policy. We definetely do not have nearly as many wheelhouses over here in WI as you guys do in MN, but my agent knew exactly what a Grand Lodge was so that helped. Very easy to insure. We just got it and I just put insurance on it last month. I'm going to check into coverage on the contents though because I don't know if much was said about that. I want to make sure all of my Vexilars, cameras, augers, etc are covered also. I did make a call to Progressive because I have both of my ATVs insured with them. They called back and told me flat out that they would not insure a wheelhouse.

man this is why this darn insurance garbage is so confusing and frustrating! Just on this thread we have one person in SD with a stand alone policy through AmFam, one in WI with the same, but I am being told AmFam wont write a stand alone policy! I'd like to rip my hair out.

State Farm wont do a stand alone unless I have something else insured with them. They are almost double my current rate on my autos, over double on my boat, and over double on my atv's. Didnt even get a quote on homeowners as I have heard of WAY to many people who have had nothiong but hassles with State Farm on homeowners claims and I am nothing but satisfied with my current insurer and agent.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
