Strikemaster auger stops dead when breaking thru!

This is a Lazer Mag 2 years old and I am getting tired of this stopping when breaking thru the ice. I mean the auger stopping at the bottom of the hole!

My sons newer Strikemaster with the Solo engine zings right thru the ice as he is drilling three holes to my one as I am fighting mine to get thru the ice. And some times the engine will stop, and some time it will break thru the ice then screw itself all the way down the screw and the engine would quit. So here I am trying to get this motor started with the auger screw all the way into the ice and then try to get the hole cleared so I can remove it!

I see the auger is made in China. Go figure! mad

I had the same trouble brough it to SM and they informed me that the pitch was off they corrected the pitch and it cuts through the ice with out issue.

I had same issue too with the same result. They also adjusted the idle a bit too so it has a little more power at the end of the hole. Has worked flawlessly since.

Get ahold of Strike Master, they will fix you up. I've dealt with their customer service and all I can say is good things. Give em a call and see if you can get a Dr's appointment first thing in the morning. Go have a little breakfast and you should be back on the road by noon.

I sent them an email regarding the problems I have and they called me on my phone and we went thru my problems step by step.

He told me to check the bolts holding the blades on to see if they are tight as this could be what is stopping the sauger.

Also went over the motor not running correctly. He told me to check the carburator float/needle valve assembly as the tab on the float lever needs to be adjusted up or down to let the correct amount of gas to flow thru.

He said if that doesn't fix it that I should bring it in to them at Big Lake location to resolve the problem.

I said thank you the the time and information.

Like everybody claims here that their customer is tops, and now I know why! smile

I live 2 miles from StrikeMaster and the very few issues my father and I have had with their augers were always resolved very quickly and almost always free of charge. Sounds like pitch to me also, though. Does it pause or hesitate at all during the rest of the cut or cut slow?

If you have the blades made in China, strikemaster will send you out new ones for free that are made in Sweden. They did for me and said they had problems with some augers having bad blades made in China. They just wanted the Serial number of the auger, serial number of the blades and I think they asked me where I purchased the auger and when.

Good Luck!

You could switch over to the chipper bit, and that would solve the problem also.

Well, I like how fast the auger drills thru the ice and I don't think I would change to a slower chipper blade as I like to drill alot of holes quickly.

I just want it to drill a complete hole quick without any issues.

My question is the auger that's made in China the culprit?

My sons auger say's it's made in Sweden and his drills like a dream!

I have the same auger and had same problem. A ran some sea foam, cleaned carb with carb spray, new plug and new gas. Auger is now running great but still would not cut and get hung up in bottom of hole. Blades had no nicks and didnt feel dull. Bit the bullet and bought new blades, cuts like new now and runs great.

Good luck

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
