Having 2 flashers in a portable

I own a Marcum LX3-tc. I was thinking about picking up another flasher for my 12 year old son. Should I go with another Marcum or get a vexilar or humminbird instead. To minimize interference, which would be the best one to pair with a Marcum.

I fished an LX3 and an LX5 out of the same house last year and definitely picked up some interference. With some adjusting on the IR we were able to overcome it enough to fish but it still wasn't perfect.

I had the same results fishing next to an FL8 and an FL20. The FL8 couldn't even use his because of the interference but me and the FL20 were able to tune each other out enough to fish. Again, wasn't perfect but it was good enough.

Probably worth noting that the FL8 is pretty old. Not even sure if it had IR or not.

Somebody else can confirm but I thought that 'birds used a different freq and therefore may be less likely to pick up interference???

IF that is true, an ice 35 might be a good option. Sounds like headcheese and his buddy have it worked out pretty well.

Really a lot is going to depend on how deep of water your fishing, and how hard the bottom is. The harder the bottom, and the deeper the water.. the more problems you are going to have. If you already have a MarCum unit. I would try and have your second one also be a marcum as they will be able to play nicer together. Your other option would be the Humminbirds as I think they run a different frequency. I have not had good luck with a marcum and cheaper Vex unit.. However I have not tried any of their newer ones.

You'll be able to clean up the interference if you go with 2 Marcs (we fish 4 together with no interference) and because of the different frequencies you shouldn't have any interference if you go with the Bird. The Vex will be the worst, you probably will have a clear display on your Marc and a lot of junk on the screen for the Vex. Hope that helps and good luck.

I typically fish with a guy that has and fl-18 vex as do I. We have some issues with interference. He can adjust his by pushing the gain button. Mine doesn't have that. On Wednesday we are headed to Lake of the Woods with another guy that has an fl-18. I was thinking about getting a different unit anyway, so now would by the time to get one. What would be my best option for fishing next to a fl-18 most of the time and 2 in this upcoming trip? fl-20, ice55, or LX-5?

FWIW, we can fish just fine, perfect actually, with an LX5 and FL20 in same shack, in less about 20ish FOW. But the LX5 with an FL8 and the fl8 might as well pack up and move 100' away or just leave it off. Good luck.

I have ran a LX-5, FL-20, and a Hummer in the same 9.25 ice hole, and all worked after tuning in the IR. It's just a matter of tuning the IR properly. The Hummer runs on a different frequency spectrum, so it's the least bothersome in a herd.

Very often MarCums do not play well with others, especially olderVexilar FL-8's and Fl-18's Vexilars.

In all of the post FL-8 SE units, I have always been able to solve the IR problem with a few basic adjustments.

Topcat, that's what my buddy said to me to. Then he tried on mine and couldn't figure it out either. My gain button does not push in. Is there a different way to do it?

You either tap the top knob, or there is a Yellow IR Button on the FL-8 SE's between the two adjustment knobs...tap that one tell the IR problems is gone. It has a 10 point adjustment...ten taps and it cycles over from the beginning.

In a worse case situation, shorten up the ducer depth in the ice hole, then tap/cycle the IR tell tie interference is gone. This often eliminates peripheral splatter from high wattage units near you.

Ed, I'm guessing that my fl-18 was defective right from the get go. I've never been able to adjust it. My buddy always has to adjust his so they get along. I'm just worried that in a house with 3 of them going I'm going to have issues. I don't want to be stuck on lake of the woods for 3 days of fishing and not have a decent flasher. I'm thinking of buying the hummingbird, except the target separation is 2 1/2 inches. That is holding me back.

If you have a bad transducer, it will suffer more from IR complications. Test that first. Swap out the ducer with another Vex, and see how it then behaves.

If you need to buy a new ducer, get the New Tri-Beam, that too will help with IR issues as you will have a wider range of cones to work with. The new Tri-Beam is the same price as the old duel beam, if you can find one, they are in short supply yet.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
