Hoping I made a good buy, wifes washer was on it's last leg and has been for awhile, I ran across a 3-4 year old like new looking Maytag Neptune for $125 so on the spur of the moment snatched it up. Did I buy a good washer?? Anything special I should know about or watch for???

Well I look at it like this I guess, it works, it was cheap ( wont cut into fishing fund) and she wanted a front loader. Lady I got it from said to leave the door open when not in use to prevent that smell. Mine seems to drain great, I'm testing it out now and my heavy weight hoodie sweatshirts were almost dry before putting them in the dryer, that impressed me. Oh well hopefully she likes it, she doesn't know I ot it yet since she's been out of town all week. Is it weird I think nothing of dropping $1-$2K on a new fishfinder but have to buy items we use everyday when I find a deal???

Just sitting here thinking of what we have invested in appliances, tv's and furnature, ect, less than $1500. The 4 muskie combos I carry everyday in the boat cost more than that..... Then again we have that invested in ice fishing electronics LOL

Dude, cut out the second graph of your post before some wife reads it.

I have read about the problem with the smell in the front loaders and even saw something on the counter at the hardware store that dealt with it. Do the Google and you'll learn all you need to know. Something about them not draining all the way and crud building up and starting to stink.

You got a good deal but the HE washers are more prone to becoming a petri dish.

Yes you have to wash a washer. smile

Search the web to learn how to clean disinfect the washer and tips to keep it from becoming smelly.

Same for top loaders.

In a nutshell you'll be getting areas of the washer where crud builds up. Removal of crud, mold, and then disinfectant on and in detergent/softener dispensers, gaskets, hoses, and filters/traps. Once you get that cleaned out then periodic treatment like techno fresh in between the whole clean down.

I would cut out he part about the "Wifes washer on its last leg" before she sees it. You may find yourself in the doghouse and not the fishhouse! grin I have a top load maytag and it ucks, no maytags for me.

Odors are most commonly caused by using too much soap. You are using around a third of the water that you used in a top load machine. So you should use a third or less detergent. In fact, a lady I work with uses no detergent when washing her towels. She says there is enough soap in the towels from shampoo and soap residue that came off you body. It is a good idea to use HE detergent. It is a low sudsing detergent. Suds in a front load can cause other problems. Detergents are animal fat based. If you use too much soap, the machine doesn't use enough water to thouroghly rinse the detergent out of the machine. Being animal fat it would be like putting some hamburger on the counter and letting it set for a week. It will smell bad. There is a product called Refresh for washing machines. I think they recommend using it once a month.

The older neptunes were horribile. I think most of the issue's have been fixed..overall front loaders of today are pretty decent...get aquantied with cleaning it on a regular basis & no odor prob. Repairs are big $$$$..may be easier to replace than repair

Neptunes odor problem is with the gasket seal around the door. (mainly the bottom) It doesnt drain all the way, so water stands in it. With the door closed and a bit of water standing in a rubber gasket, it doesnt take long for a mildewy odor to appear. The gaskets easy to clean, thats the good thing. My wife used to wipe the gasket out with a paper towel whenever she was done. Once you have the odor, its hard to get rid of. First thing to look for is a musty smelling towel. It wont smell musty out of the dryer, but when you use it after a shower, youll notice it. The remark made about the detergent needs to be heeded. They dont use very much soap.

Id clean the carp out of the gasket and everything else that looks like it needs to be done, and then run a load with a gallon of white vinegar in it. We all know how vinegar is for controlling odors. wink If that dont cut it, run a load with some extra bleach.
