Any Reports From the Chippewa Ntl Forest?

Recommended Posts

I have hunted up there multiple times this year. Lots and lots of birds in the areas we've hunted. Most of what we hunt is around Remer & Hill City. My friend and I have moved close to 80 birds in the 4 or 5 days we've hunted. Not all of those days were full days. The cover has really opened up dsince we were there last. Last Friday alone we moved 30+ birds. It was WAY too hot & dry for the dogs so scenting was alittle tough. To make things worse me and my buddy both had the worst shooting days of our lives. We very easily could have had a limit witth beter shooting and better dog work. We ended up with 6 grouse and 2 woodcock for the weekend. Will hunt pheasnats aroun home this weekend and then head back up to Chippewa for the next two.

Hunted on 10/2 and 10/3 around the Winnie and Pennington area. It was slow. Lots of cover was still available though. Got 4 birds on the week end. I hunted one day last week, the 7th, and I seen more birds and even got a few. I was around the Ketchum and Cuba Hill Roads just east of Cass Lake. I may go out this evening and hit the east side of Leech Lake or around Boy Lake or Brevik.

I've been in the Chip only 2 times this season. Got 2 birds on the first hunt and 3 the other day. I'm only 10 minutes from the entrance on the NW side up here, and I've seen birds on nearly every walk. LOTS of hunters too... I don't head that direction much unless it's mid-week.

I was just talking to a guy the other day who lives near Kelliher. I was telling him that in the 10 years I've lived here I've never made it up his direction. It's a shame too, as the birds are plentiful. He said that they've been seeing and getting birds like crazy. It's always been good, but I never go!

matt, do you ever make it up to the kelliher or saum area? any good areas to hunt?

I went to school in bemidji 10+ years ago, had access to some private land outside of saum and always was able to find birds. Worth looking in that area.

Flushed quite a few birds in the few chippewa cuts I hunted. Definitely saw more pressure in the Chippewa as well though during the weekends. Probably do better off the main highways. Lots of Blandin land to explore uo there too!

Flowing Well area is interesting and good grouse habitat. Probably gets hammered though.

That's where we were. Buddy of mine has a shack up there, saw 21 came back with 14, 1 woodcock. Walked everywhere, mostly off the beaten paths. Friday was perfect, Saturday the wind picked up and the birds were jumpy. Sunday morning was a little slow.

All in all it was a good weekend, great weather albeit a little warm walking during the noon hour.

I hunted the Chippewa NE of Leech Lake on Sunday. It was an absolutely beautiful day in the woods. Calm, sun shining, fresh air; nature's therapy. We were scouting for deer hunting, and doin a little grouse hunting. No dogs, I counted about 18 flushes. All in the middle of jungle aspen stands. Had very few shots due to cover. Managed one grouse and a woodcock. Was just great to get out and see that many birds in only 4 hours of walking. Can't wait for deer hunting to get over with so I can make it back there and actually focus on Grouse.
