Just wondering how many of you guys hunt the tree rats?

I do and some of my fondest memorys of hunting with my dad and grandfather are from squirrel hunting .

I have gotten my sons into hunting thru tree rats and they both love it.

They taste great speacially deboned and in barbque sause mmmm making me hungy for squirrel.

Started hunting them with a 410 but quickly moved to a 22 rifle

Grandpa used a shotgun and only took head shots

There's a fine line between hunting and annihilating. =)

I squirrel hunt all the time. It's always a nice break from deer hunting or fishing! Never ate squirrel though!

Shot 11 of them in my yard last fall within an hour, that's my record.

I use my 12 guage, basically because I enjoy watching them fly backwards when I hit them.

Haven't been squirrel hunting for some time but I have to agree with you. Some great memories of squirel hunting when I was a kid and they were pretty tasty fried up as well. Tasted pretty much like chicken. Used to ride our bikes carrying a 22 to a woods just outside of town. Always an adventure.

I haven't had squirrel in a long long time, so long I can't even remember what it was like. I remember them being a pain in the rear to skin and IMHO it wasn't worth the effort. I am tempted to go out and harvest one though just to try it again. I know some old timers that love squirrel brains and eggs. Probably not ever gonna try that though.

As a youngster, I killed plenty of things for no reason other than killing: rabbits, squirrels, songbirds, etc. Just like shooting popcans or targets except the dead animal was, I guess, some sort of testament to my skill and accuracy with a pellet gun. Now I have grown up and don't kill things I won't eat. Never did get off on blowing living things apart with a 12 gauge just to watch it happen though. Hopefully you'll grow out of that, JP.

I shoot 10 to 15 a year . It is our yearly tradition to have squirl for a deer hunting meal. We quarter them, brown them in flower, and cook them in a roaster for 5 hours in cream soup.

Can't say I ever used anything but a 22 for them.

One time I gut shot a squirl when I was younger and my dad started a fire in the tree to smoke it out, to my suprise it worked.

I feel squirrel hunting is a win win situation. I get to eat them and then sell their tails to mepps. How couldn't you hunt for them.

How much do you get for them? What do you have to do to prep them?

I guess I should start to save them if someone can use them. More info would help.

*Tails are best on squirrels taken after October 1st.

*Do NOT remove the bone from the tail. Deboned and split tails have no value.

*Be sure the tail is straight before drying. Tails that dry in a curled position cannot be used.

*Keep tails away from flies. Best storage is in a freezer. Do not send tails that have been exposed to flies.

*Do not put tails in a plastic bag for storage or shipment. They could heat up and spoil.

*The best time to ship is during cold weather months (Jan, Feb, & Mar). Dried squirrel tails may be shipped anytime.

Pricing varies depending on quantity and quality. Anywhere from .16 to .26 per. It's not much, but adds up quick. You'll have to visit their site to learn more if you are interested.

Try doing an advanced search in the Cooking forum, there will be a few ideas in there from a year or so ago. But basically, you can sub squirrel into any dish that calls for any kind of meat. I've used it in my Fettucine, squirrel noodle soup, squirrel pot pies, squirrel ala king. Things like that.

Mixed powdered hot chili's to the seed mix. It does not effect the birds, but tree rats get the full effect.
