I like a heavy bullet. Not because it is necessary to kill the animal but because it creates a good wound channel, has better knock down power and usually makes an exit hole. If the animal does not drop it will not go far and if you need it there is a clear blood trail to follow. I have never overkilled an animal. Unfortunately over the years I have underkilled a few. You must still be proficient with your firearm regardless of what round you choose.

I have been shooting hornady SST's out of my .308 because they are the most accurate ones I have found, (my gun is very picky). Three deer in the last 2 years had acute lead deficiencies and were instantly cured with that 150 gr. dose. I am thinking of switching to the Barnes ttsx, if and only if they match the accuracy of those SST's otherwise why fix something that is not broken. (I know that sounds redundant after saying my current round works awesome, but I like trying new things)

I've used to reload the Hornady 180gr Round Nose for a long time, I switched to the Sierra 180gr Game King and have been experimenting with the 180gr Barnes HP all copper.

Just wondering if you have taken any game with an all copper bullet.

Our party has taken at least 6 deer with copper. Barnes TSX. They kill deer dead. Entrance and exits right on par with Core Lokt's which most of our guys were shooting previously, and right on par with Fusions which I shot previously. Only difference is the cost of the copper. Longest track was maybe 40 yards within sight. Most dropped on the spot. If you are interested in going the copper route, I would recommend them. We have stuck with 180 grain.

I was the lone hold out for a couple years because I couldn't get our hand loads to group well with my gun. Fusions were very accurate for me. I switched to factory loaded Federal Premium with barnes TSX, and accuracy greatly improved for me. They shoot as well as the fusions did out of my model 700.

I use standard Federal 180 grain, and buy them in same lot 6+ boxes at a time and they last for years. Never had a problem. Been shooting same gun and grain for 40+ years. My father bought this rifle in 1950 and still is the best deer rifle I have. No scope, no frills, just plain jane Remington bolt action. Good out to 300 yards with practice.

Corelokt is good. You don't need a premium bullet to kill a deer. If someone with a 243 80gr bullet can do it, all you need in the 30.06 is a 150gr. 180 is WAY over kill even for black bear. Many people hunt black bear with 270's in Wisc. Again, the 30.06 has plenty of getup and go. 150 recoils less too.

I really feel bullet choice for MN deer is a bit overload, whatever you go with sight in your rifle well and you'll be 100% confident this season. I just stuck with 30.06,180 grain core-lokt since 1983 and have fired nothing but and have made a very minor adjustment or 2 on the scope over 27 years now, wow 27 years. Reality check here.Me and my boys use a deer decoy to sight into, makes the recoil feel less and we all know we feel nothing rarely when shooting at the real deal holyfield unless the scope gets ya in the beak or eye. Not that I'm counting but 22 moons to deer camp so get er on-line soon.
