Line and leader for a rattle reel

What kind of line/leader/hook combination does everyone use on their rattle reels and what size/weight/length?

We rented a house from Paul W at appledoorns several years ago and he had this "rubber backing type of line" on his rattle reels with a floro-leader split shot and colored hook. playing the fish with that line was so sweet we purchased some from Portside the next opener and have used it in our Wheel house since. It is like fly fishing line that is rubbery in feel and it comes in several really "masculine" pastel colors but it is great to fish with. The different colors are nice when a fish wraps up several lines at night also, was a breeze to untangle.

Hopefully Paul can tell us, what is the line called?

I have my rattle wheels spooled with the black tip up line(I believe 30# test), then a swivel and I use a 2-4 ft mono or Vanish leader.

Do you ever get bite offs with a fluoro or mono leader?

fly line is by far the best. Expensive but well worth it.

Some with mono, very few with the flouro. I also run a heavier test line with the flouro than I do the mono. Also, I usually only use the rattle wheels later at night and seldom catch pike. Don't seem to have problems with the eyes getting hooked too deep.

I second the fly line. I've been switching out the 30 # black stuff for fly line with a flouro leader and there are way less tangles, which is huge when you're out there in the house.

there is a place south of mille lacs on 169 that sells rolls of it. i think the rolls are about 50-75 ft. pretty cheap also.

I use vinyl coated tip up line. I think it is HT. I also have used fly line but like sinking line better. I thought floating line floated too much. Like the other guys put a mono 6' tippet on it.. Works great...

The way you set the line down is key with a hand line.If you bring the line in hand over hand,every time you switch hands you spin the line 1/2 turn or more.If you pull the line in with the same hand without switching hands there will be alot less twist in the line.(Less tangles=more fishing time)I'll have to try fly line sometime.I use 20 or 30#Dacron with a fluorocarbon leader or mono or steel depending on type of fish were targeting.Good luck!c63

Fly line is the best, I prefer the braided tip up line over the rubber type coated line for better reel up and less mess.

Fly line. No tangles at all, unless an eel pout decides to swim around and tangle everything up under the ice.

This is precisely why I use Dacron or braided line.Fly line is more expensive and I would prefer another case of refreshments instead!Good luck catching-:)c63

You know can buy fly line off of the big auction site for like 4 or 5 bucks, type in rattle reel and fly line. Another place is at your local fly fishing stores they usally have outdated line on sale.
