HSO's Members Smart "Cell" Phone Apps & App Reviews

Shack

Recommended Posts

I figured I would do start (I know another) thread about "your" apps. I know there is an iPhone app threads somewheres, but I did a moderate level style search and found nothing. If anyone finds one post a link and I will add it below.

Here are some sources that already have app info for the smartphones in them:

1) Dtro's App Review on the HSO Home Page

2) Dtro's Droid X

I figure since it seems smartphone apps are made the same in feature and even names, we would start a thread sharing with us your currently "cool" and commonly used apps.

It seems any app Android users talk about, I search and boom, there it is for my iPhone. I would have to think the same is had with the Android and other running systems like Windows, RIM, Palm....

Apps always change for me and the apps I used everyday over a year ago are not the same as what I use everyday today.

List your popular apps and heck, list all your apps. You never know what others might find interests in. Also list the phone you are "currently" grinsmirk using. ^-months to a year seems like the life expectancy of SPer's.

Today grin for me, starting from the top, is:

iPhone 4

Real Director, video editing

Ustream Broadcaster, live video streaming

Art Studio, photo editing appearance and graphics app

Photobucket, image uploading

Wells Fargo, banking

HP iPrint, sending to wireless HP printers stuff to print

Light, turns on he led camera flash to use a flash light or strobe

Converter, changes any measurement to display what they are in other forms of measurement.

Mirror Zoom, an app that turns the rear facing camera into a mirror

ESPN FFL, crazy cool when tracking an ESPN fantasy football league, with stats and minute to minute updates via alerts.

AOL Radio, steaming any genre of music for free.

iHeart Radio, gets in some local FM stations like mentioned in the other therad (MN VIkes crysal clear).

Bay of E & List of uncle Craig Pro, speaks for its self.

App Sniper, pulls any app that is set as free for a promotional time period or discounted and is a very cool way to buy a $10-$5.00 apps for $0.99.. wink Plus with the categories, will "Q" you in on apps just coming out or ones you have no clue about.

Primos Hunting Calls, just a cool app that has many different hunting game call sounds. Some have stated they have used it in the field to actually attract game.

Sporstman Channel, you can watch videos and shows in either Hunt, Shoot, or Fish categories. They change, some times good, other times the same.

Lure Selector, seems to be pretty current with new lures.

In Country TV, great outdoors sportsman app with videos, music and more.

HuntFishTracker, a good app to record you catches and game bagged, although Dtro has me looking at others, but this is free. You have the option of storing info on your phone or via their web server and your phone.

B-room #2 Games laugh

Sandstorm, first person shooter game that has actual on-line muti-player. Extremely cool graphics and the closest thing to MW2 I can find for a smartphone. It's hosted on a server, which in turn you host the match via WiFi, or just play the game. Maps are limited for the multi-player, but more will come. Multi-player goes between all smartphones I believe, so hit me up as a friend. Gamer tag Shackbash.

Colorized, cool game that you have to select colors in cubs. Kind of a different style of Tetras, but in reverse.

iHunt 3D, just a shooter game to pass the time

The coolest app I have going and still is,

Navionics North, greatest map for any fisherman who fishes lakes and river. I am awaiting an upgrade to version 4.4, but this has been one of my truly greatest functionality apps to date. Amazingly when ice fishing or open water fishing, buddies still do not have electronics with GPS, let alone a chip. After using this app now for over a year, it has made some trips better just by knowing where you are fishing.

My most used app for a purpose is,

Weather Bug Pro, they have provided mire info than I need with springs and summer like we just had, Very easy and cool app to learn. I have TWC and used others, but IMO Weather Bug takes the cake. My wife even uses it when storms are heading in. Funny tid bit, but just finally changed my first default city from Jordan, MN to Princeton. laugh

I am always looking for cool apps anywhere, it seems I always find the "cool" via you guys & gals here at HSO and just looking to scam a couple more off you guys and gals. Games! I am always looking for cool games to try out.

The Navionics are great! I have the Lakes North and the Great lakes. I have a app the I hope will come in handy this winter while out doing some bird photography and it is the Peterson Field Guide. It is pretty cool because it has all the bird calls ( Great way to drive the cats nuts). I also have My-Cast for a weather app the is really good and shows the radar just like you see on NOAA. I have RadarScope but that weather app is just a little too much info for me but it has one cool feature and that is a live sweeping radar that is just cool to watch.

Cool Jim, I was looking at the Peterson's app not to long ago and thinking of you guys in the Bird forum. Have not tried My-Cast or Radar scope yet, but will. With the last upgrade to Weather Bug, they finally added the radar sweep to give you an idea of where it is heading via the radar and without having to look into details.

Ok my list is short but sweet.

Weather

Weatherbug Elite-this is my number 1 used app on my phone. Radar is current within 5 minutes or less and it has all the actual data I could ask for. (plus if your into watching a video forecast its done by hot chicks)

Weather Channel-I use it just to get another opinion about forecasts.

GPS

Navionics-This one has been pretty much explained already. Gotta love it for the price too. Almost makes owning a actual gps not necessary.

My Tracks-Gives you a decent logging capabilities and allows you to mark your location (the only thing that Navionics lacks IMO) Is nice because you get the overlay on Google maps which includes terrain and sattelite.

Trimble Outdoors-Pretty much a esoteric app for geocachers. I do like that you can switch to bing maps though. A waste of money for most people especially considering My Tracks is free.

Google Sky-Cool app for seeing whats really in the night sky.

Latitude-Good way to keep track of friends on a map. I was able to see exactly where a friend of mine was fishing on a lake (he was in Alexandria I was stuck here in the $hities) and suggest a move for them. They caught more fish. I could see it as being extremely useful for hunting too. Especially since it shows your latest buzz if your into that too.

Tools

Droidlight-A flashlight that does exactly that and nothing else, works good.

AK Notepad-Simple way to keep notes. Not really a great app but it allows me to keep my random thoughts from being lost.

Beautiful Widgets-Don't really need this one with the new widgets on 2.2 but it does give me lots of clock options and one touch widgets for gps, wifi, screen brightness, silent mode, ect.

Entertainment

Mario Soundboard-I cant help myself. Every text message is a one up and emails are coins. Plus if your really bored you can run it off of the gyro and make it so every time you move/jump you hear the whatever sound you want. Go jumping by a isle in walmart with the jump sound going off.

Pandora-My second most used app. I love that it tunes a station to similar artists to the ones I choose. Plus the more you interact with it the more it dials in what you like. You don't have to listen to a bad song twice.

Solitaire-Its boring but its the only one that I can play and put down without being mad about it.

Thats all my apps. Not a whole lot of stuff but I have downloaded and deleted a lot of stuff. I gave up on games because it was just too much. I had a real problem with bubble breaker for a while and I had to give it up. With true internet its tough for me to get bored.

If your on the fence about getting a gps and have a android or iphone you can get pretty much all the benefits for $12.99. Navionics(12.99) and My Tracks (free) will take care of almost all the things you could want. Pretty good deal IMO.

One I forgot but is cool to listen to once and awhile about stuff going on all over is Police Scanner 5-0 Radio. You can hear local police, fire & DNR. Just heard a drunk mountain bike rider get tazed in Stearns County lol. Must have been one heck-of-a-party last night. laugh

Yea, I listen to the scanner.

I just downloaded ECID, enhanced caller id.

It was $1.39, but it'll announce the phone number while the phone is ringing, plus it reads your texts outloud.

For those that are going to say you can get one free, but those won't play though the headphones.

Now when I'm mowing, I don't have to keep pulling the phone out of the holster.

It would work well with dtro's idea of while fishing as well, listening with external speakers.

Once the kids head to bed, I'll post my list as well.

I need to go through the above ones as well, I just scanned them, but need to look into them closer.

My apps

Pandora

Radar Now I have the NWS bookmarked to the home screen, so I just need a fast app for the radar.

AppBrain

Air Control Lite

Barcode Scanner

Best Buy

Coupons

C-List

DroidLight

eBa*

eCID Enhanced caller ID which reads texts without looking at the phone, good for using headphones or external speakers

Google Goggles

Google Sky Map

Hangman for the kids... wink

Homerun Battle

iheartradio

Live Hold'em

Paper Toss

QVC for the wife

Scanner Radio

I had Ringdriod, but it won't work on my X for some reason.

I also just added iLightr

The Rainy Days radar was quite blurry compared to Radar Now.

I emailed the NWS to see if they were going to have apps out soon for Android and they said they're working on it, but the red tape was holding it up.

Thanks for reminding me to take a look at iheartradio grin

I Like!

A cool app that come's with a Iphone is there Maps. You show up as a current location as a blue dot and when you hit that it will show you what the address is and you can hit a red dot on the left and it will show you pictures of the area in a 360 degree view of where you are at. It will not show our house but it will show all the buildings in downtown Carlton

Does anyone know of an Android App that will allow the GPS settings to be turned on when put into the car dock, then automatically turned off when taken out of the car dock?

Will "Locale" do that? Or does that just turn your ringer / notifications off and on depending on where you're at?

Thanks Lmit, that Homerun Battle 3D is a winner!

What's the deal with the gold coins? I played this game for hours last night and only accumluated like 60. You need thousands to buy any of the cool gear or uniforms? Do I really need to buy the full version to bank some coins?

I don't know what the gold coins are for. I just swing at the ball until it tells me the game is over. grin

Got another app/widget for the Android guys: Multicon. Shrinks the icons down so that you can fit more on the screen. It doesn't automatically shrink them all....it's a widget where you can select how many icons you want to display in a grid formation and then designate which apps you want in that grid. The icons for the apps are used but are just smaller.

Tune In Radio

I have a post or two about this app in the Droid X thread, but I figured I'd throw it in here for those that don't have a Droid, or don't read that thread.

Basically it's another radio app that allows you to listen to any radio station other than Clear Channel radio stations. It allows you to set presets and will list what song is currently playing on that preset.

You can do a local search if you have GPS enabled, or you can do a search for Podcasts and it'll let you listen to them.

I did a search for KFAN and it even came up with shows from PA % Dubay.

Best of all, it's free!

It's an Android App, so I'm not sure if you iPhoners can get it.

I'm not real app heavy, but will have to down load some of these listed above.

One that i do have is called iSynch which when ever you plug your phone into the computer it will synch up your podcasts or playlists with iTunes automatically.

I just changed to Pandora on my computer at work. We dont have very good speakers in the office I'm in, so I was always using cbs radio online. I like this Pandora a lot better because i can funnel the music to what I want to hear. On the other set up, reggae wasn't always reggae and country wasn't always country...

The autozone app is pretty decent for being free. I don't get many parts there but its nice to have a streamlined way to get a idea of what something is gonna cost. There is also some basic DIY repair guides on there too. Nothing fancy but its enough to get a idea of what your up against.

Go to RadioTime.com It's all the radio stations on your computer on one screen, with all of the links to their streams.

If you register for real, not just run the app, then the "local" tab works. You can then set your stations on the HSOforum, and will transfer to the app once you log in on the app.
