AK rough fishing

I just got back from charter fishing out of Kodiak and had to share this with you guys! I've got circle shaped bruises on my stomach from the rod butt, aches in my arms, adrenaline still pumping, and a big grin on my face!

And just for good measure, here's another for those of you guys who also like "ugly" fish as much as me!

We came back with nearly 400lbs of undressed meat, lots of delicious rock fish (aka black bass) and cod, on top of 2 nice ling cod (second one about half as big as the big one pictured above) and three nice eater sized halibut in the 10-25lb range.

My sister came back with the lone salmon, a silver nonetheless which are still a few weeks a way from coming in to shore for the most part.

cool pics! 400 lbs is a looooot of fish! we took 450lbs home in july when we went, mostly salmon and halibut, and it is crazy how much fish that is. how many lbs is that ling cod? when we were up there they werent in season yet and we had to toss the ones back that we caught. i hear they are delicious

Thanks for the replies! I'm still in awe whenever I think about it. The beast's called a Lingcod. It had a ~4lb black rockfish and a similar weight silver salmon in its gullet, and it STILL hit a giant halibut jig (huge white grub on a 1 or 2lb lead jighead)

We stayed in Kodiak for a few days at a B&B run by a couple who are teachers during the colder 9 months of the year. In the tourist season they have guests at their place. The wife does most of the housekeeping it seemed and the husband runs a fishing charter called Island Angler Charters. If anyone ever goes to Kodiak, they come highly recommended! Very nice family and a great day of fishing with constant action for all of us throughout the whole day.

Kodiak was just a huge blast, we got to see big bears and do lots of stream fishing for chum and pink salmon as well. It seemed like every time we drove over a stream, there'd be a school of about a hundred or more fish stacked up waiting for the tide to move upstream.

Now I'm back in Anchorage with the folks doing some hiking on nearby trails when the weather clears up. My flight back down to MN is on Tuesday, and I'm hoping that I got to miss the worst of the summer heat as we move into the second half of August.

I think you did miss the worst of the summer heat. We dropped down into the 60's with this last cold front. Cold enough that we thought about jackets Sunday morning.

That fishing is a blast - my favorite kind! It's always great to see people report back from trips like yours. Congrats on your success!

Isn't the second fish an Irish Lord? If it is, that's a beaut.

That is a nice pic of a ling. Ocean fishing can pile up the lbs of fish in a hurry. Two of us just got back and we arrived in MN with 225 Lbs of silvers, reds, ling, halibut and rockeys plus we gave away some. All of you FMers should put an Alaskan trip on your must-do list.
