using shot for squirrel?

Recommended Posts

i plan to take my bro to carlos avery to teach him how to use a shotgun for deer season and i think using the shotgun for squirrel could be a great way to start. is it legal to use shot for squirrel at carlos and what size shot should i use and should it be steel or lead?

I would look at the DNR HSOforum, it will answer all of those questions about Carlos Avery.....I would use nomber 8 shot for the squirrel definitely don't aim for the body, aim to the side of the squirrel. To much shot in the squirrel will ruin it for the table.

Make sure you have your orange on, watch out for archers in the tree, dont want to mistake their elbows for them tree rats, also make sure you get up to the carlos avery office and grab a map of the area so you dont wander into the no hunting areas,

There are always CO's out there, well they were always there during duck season.

Be sure to shoot during legal squirrel season. I'd drop down to #6 shot-cleaner kills. Squirrels are tough critters. If you just want to teach somebody to shoot a shotgun it is not necessary to go to the woods to kill something. Go to the range or a good open area on a farm and blast milk jugs, old melons and paper targets all at various ranges. Shoot some targets with shot shells and make sure he shoots targets with the same slug load he will be using while hunting deer so he can feel the difference.

And since you are just starting out in hunting, become familiar with the DNR site for all the information it contains on seasons, methods and means, bag limits and hunting ethics.

I know all the regs and seasons and the ranges dont open to the public until october and some are too exspensive. I want to teach my bro kinda ASAP since i know how he shoots he even has a flinch shooting my 10/22 so i need the extra time to teach him all the things that go into shooting a firearms correctly

truth to that statement, ive had many 22 bullets zinged over my head out there while bowhunting...stay out of carlos avery, unless you want to be on the front page of the star trib. There are many other WMA's in the area, chekc out the dnr HSOforum and you will find more hunting areas than you knew existed, YOU NEED TO USE NON TOXIX SHOT IN ALL WMA's...if you didnt already know that. Also, there are NO squirrels and or tweety birds left in Carlos...its a large dead zone, its the truth. Ive seen people out there with pockets full of tweety birds, blue jays, robins, chickadees...walk around the woods sometime there, they are silent.
