RoosterR
Looking to build my first basic boat blind. I have a 12 foot jon boat. What do you prefer to use for the frame conduit or pvc. Not in budget for alum. I've looked at pic of scissor frames, do they work good. I would rather not have a top on it. Next when the frame is done what do you put on netting or burlap. All hunting is in cattail surroundings. Do you buy grass mats or make your own. Also I use oars and the oarlocks to get around so the have to be accessible. Looking to stay under $200. New to the blind thing so any thoughts and ideas and even pics would be great. Thanks a ton!!
Superduty
I made a scissors style blind for a 16' boat last fall for about $250. Just did an online search and picked the plan I liked best. Lot's of info out there with pictures to help out. I used 3/4" conduit for the frame. You will need a conduit bender. Made a quick release bracket out of angle iron and trailer hitch pins so the blind is removable. My biggest expense was the leafy camo net. Added raffia style grass to the netting for realism. Go with the grass mats if weight isn't a concern. They can be kind of heavy when wet for a folding blind.
Muthagoose
If I built another it would be a scissor. This one was built mid 80's and is still working... Used wire grass from the ditches.Long tough and just the right color.Never hurt to clump in a few cattails. Shot lots of birds pulled up on mud banks... mnmuzzleloader
made one similar to that a couple of years ago for my 14', it works great fold it down as you travel down the lake and then open the panel over the boat and one over the bow and good to go. I did make one side taller to cove our heads. I modeled it after my buddy who had his made by a couple guys down St Peter way. Pipe bender is a must and rest is simple. Used a black plastic mesh to give it stability and then added the netting and natural grasses after, holds up very well.
Farley
Here's a home made scissors type blind I built for my 10' Ducker. 4 years and still going strong. It adds some weight though. 4 bolts and some angle steel hold it onto the boat so it's fairly easy to take off in 1 pc. I didnt use a pipe bender I just bought some of those 45 degree connectors. There are 2 styles and one breaks easy, the others (the ones you can see in the 3rd pic) work good. Oh, and get a lot of zip ties, pack some in your blind bag to use when you get set up because the grass takes a beating. It's made with Conduit and the channel the wheels ride in is whats called unistrut. Made the wheels out of plastic. See the pcs of angle on the ends, the bolts that hold the unistrut on is what stops the wheels from sliding out the end of the channel. I turned the plastic wheels on a lathe so I could make them a close fit and also to get a counterbore in there for the bolt head.
RoosterR
Maybe a dumb question but can u just use camo burlap. Is there anything to use without using grass mats.
The_Duckslayer
Mine is made out of green/brown tank camo... seems to work OK, though I do wonder sometimes. It seems not to stick out any more than the fast grass ones though...Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo
tomfromblaine
Rooster, I went for a way to snuggle into the cat tails also, I just added a 3 beefy side mount plastic rod holders along the side of my 10 ft'er and 2 across the back of the transom, I used 1/2" conduit for the vertical pieces and bolted clips (A double clip for the center pole) on the tops of them. I then used 2, 5 foot sections of conduit and tywrapped the top of the grass to it and a 4 ft for the transom, I made the transom one only because if I can pull the nose of the boat into the cats I can get tucked in real good but only room for 1 shooter. The grass mats lay in the bottom of the boat the poles on top of the and my decoys on top of everything else.I really like that guys sissor blind better though, I just didn't find anything on it before I made mine. You could use camo'ed burlap instead of grass mats, that would cut down on some weight.Tom
