What do you consider too late to bait bear?

Recommended Posts

Another baiting question. What do you think is too late in the afternoon to bait. I work until 4:00 and would probably be out baiting between 6:00-7:00, maybe a 1/2 hr earlier. Planning to bait every other day. Or would it be better to bait on the weekends only earlier in the day? Also when it comes to hunting time do you take your bait out with when you hunt and bait then go to stand? Or do you bait, then go back out and come back later?

Thanks,

Chris

Try to get out in the A.M. if you can be fore work, to late in the afternoon can work against you. the time you speak of really puts the sun down about about an hr to hr an half after you bait an dosent give a whole lot of time, if you cant get out any earlier I'd bait morning. But thats me. I f you can stand to bait in the dark of morning thats ok to cause sun up is soon to be. Boar

JB, I leave work at 4 an my sites are baited by 5. now the one up north is gonna be a once a week deal an I am done at work on fridays at 1 an that gets me there by 2 which i think will be ideal for a weekend hunt. Ya might wanna try that also, like bog said bait heavy on the weekends an hunt the weeknds, or bait in the A.M Boar

When you say bait heavy, what do you consider heavy? Start with 2-3 5 gal pails of bait and see if it is gone or not. Baiting really heavy could require multiple trips. I do have one area that I could be baiting by 5:00. Do you bait every day or every other?

If you bait to much I think that they have a tendancy to come less often.or there is the possibility of them getting tired of the same stuff and go looking for different grub. Watch what they like and give more of that just before you hunt to keep them interested. I like to sprinkle powderd sugar on the bait starting a day or two before i hunt. reason is to get a pad measurement and the nite of the hunt you can see the black on the bait so much better in low light. ---jeff--

I would certainly hit the site at five if ya could. I get off work at 4 an that puts me at site at 430, so 5 is doable. Start with two 5 gallon buckets an check after 3 days, an go from there youll start see what ya need to do. if he cleanining it out add some if hes leaving some back off a little. every bear is different so one way isnt always as good as another. Thanks for the advice. I am soaking it up. I get off work at 4:00 also and usually home by 4:30. A couple of the spots I am thinking are only a mile or 2 from the house so it should be doable. Alot will depend on where I decide to set up. One other qeustion, how many bait sites can a person have? I have 3 stuck in my head and for some reason I can't see it in the regs.

We start running our baits in the morning and are usually done by 3-4PM...We normally end up with about a dozen or so baits when we get going.

Baiting too late, you risk pushing a bear off the bait....use timers and you'll be able to tell what times the various bears are hitting...every bear is different as boar said. As for the number baits allowed...there is currently no limit...they are planning on making it 3, but that rule hasn't been adopted yet...

I like to start out with a intense sweet aroma, two things i like to do are boil up some honey an cherry jello mix, mudslinger says chocolate syrup works great to, I might try that. I bring in a camp stove or a turkey fryer with kettle, I set it up near some over hanging brush or foiliage, an I heat it up, it'll start to smoke an produce a thick white sticky smoke that'll adhear to the foiliage. I let it do this while cutting logs an setting up stand an stuff, shooting lanes, ect... Just keep an I on it, dont burn down the forest so clear an area of leaves an such. If it butns thats fine to, that just adds to the smell. I orderd two bottles of carmel extream from bear scents an you add two oz. to five gallons of fryer grease, so thats extreame, Might try boiling that. Watch the weather if it's gonna rain with in a day or two, ya might wanna wait. it'll wash the smell away. I also like to hang a gunny sack of dogfood soaked in grease, everytime I bait I lower it into a bucket of grease to freshen it up, this works great to. Just hang away it from a tree so a bear cant reach out angrab it. If it's just you i dont think you want anymore than three cause then it get to alot an by the time your done bating you might be pushing the time limit on baiting, I would find two good spots an comcentrate on those, keep them apart by a section or two or you might be hunting the same bear on both sites. Later boar

Bait when you can, but don't over bait. As said before, they get to much of one thing and go elsewhere. Use the spray baits from BEAR SCENTS - anise, etc. Burn bacon grease in a coffee can or soup can over Sterno when you get to stand and bait and are ready to hunt. The spray scents really work great. Jelly, peanut butter, syrup rubbed on trees is a good for scent also. I use the spray scent anise & bacon around when sitting in stand to cover my scent, just don't spray on yourself but between you and bait pile. I use dog food and grease for bait and change it up with bread, leftovers, etc. Even different types of grease - turkey fryer, chicken grease, etc.

Fruit of the loom stock would go thru the roof, laundry mats could increase their night hours, that might stimulate the economy a little, good idea cherokee, let me know how that gose, Hee Hee. Actualy I might try early mourning hours on a couple of local sites. Boar

Late for us is the time we want to hunt, meaning if we are going to hunt by 3pm, baiting will never take place after that, but never before noon as well. We use baiting as a dinner bell. We feel some bear get use to us comming at a certain time and will hit the stands after that. Doesn't always work as plan but have had good results in gerneral.
