Fishing Stories

kids and I were out fishing eyes this weekend, caught a ton of little ones. Hooked one that I thought was a monster, got it to the boat, was a little eye. But it got caught on an ice fishing setup that some-one had lost this last year. Threw the fish back but kept the reel. works well once I got all the mud out of it.

Two weeks ago, while the inlaws and I were fishing the Cannon river in Northfield for buffalos, an inlaw caught a bra. The funny thing was he thought he was onto a buffalo until it surfaced.

When we were kids, our parents had a small cabin cruiser - probably a 20 foot boat.

The following events all happenend at the same time, while we were trolling slowly.

My sister caught the boat motor.

My dad cut the engine.

My brother fell off of the bow because he happened to be off balance when dad cut the engine.

My mom started screaming because she's just reeled in one of those huge lake leeches.

And I got my line wrapped up in the stringer of walleyes hanging off the boat.

It was utter chaos. I wish I could see it all over again!

Just remembered this one -

Couple of years ago my son (2 at the time) and I were at a popular shore spot a bunch of folks were circled around this little inlet catching crappies, sunnies & bass, when I decided to try a minnow, 'cause those black & white fish the locals are all excited about looked pretty cool and I was ready to smell something besides sunnies. I'd been ignoring the gulls all day, so I didn't notice one come down and grab my minnow from the water - just felt a weird kind of tuggin'. Went to set the hook, and one of the gulls starts flying downwards all goofy, and my rig comes back to me from out of the sky. Now for the weird part.

Nobody noticed.

A dozen people were so intently staring at their bobbers, that nobody saw me almost catch a gull. Except for my son, that is, who said in his 2 year old voice "I don't want to use a minnow, daddy. I don't like those birds."

Ice fishing story.
My aunt, cousin, and girlfriend were ice fishing for some crappies. This house was only a 6x8 with 6 holes. A northern comes along and takes one line and then wraps the other 5 lines up with it. There were three women trying to grab 6 lines all going down at the same time thinking there was a fish on each line. It took them a while to figure out that all the lines were connected to this one fish. What a mess!!

A few years back, my son and I fishing close to the bank in small lake in Itasca County. My son casts his jig close to the bank hangs line over tree limb, drops jig in the water, catches crappie, he reels line in-up out of water, we pull under tree and take the crappie off the hook.

Couple of years ago I was fishing a local trout pond which is also known to hold enormous bucketmouths. Trouting was slow so I moved my boat into the timber and starting chucking plugs around for fun. One underhanded toss onto a weed bed and wham, explosion on the surface. This was a big bass. When I finally got it to the boat to my surprise there were two (around 2-3lbs) hooked on the plug. One on the belly treble and one on the tail. That one took a while to sink in.

A couple of years ago I was fishing crappies with an ultralite and a FruFru. I hooked into something that gave me a heck of a tussle. After a workout on the drag, I landed a 39" muskie. The ironic thing is I was on the exact same spot fishing a week later. I was telling the story to a guy fishing by me, and he said he had never seen a muskie. Right after he said that, the ultralite drag started sing. I landed another muskie idential to the first one. He thanked me for getting a look the fish.

Not my best story by far but the most recent. In March me and a buddy fished an alpine lake in the Wind River Mountains for lakers (known as macs around here) through the ice in 54 feet of water. He had few bites but caught most of them. I can take partial credit for only one. As he reeled one through the hole it fell off the hook when he hoisted it up. I noticed his second line he had been jigging in the same hole was moving and leapt over the sled to grasp the mac that was tangled in the line. Funny how the fish had entrapped itself only 18" from freedom. We weren't sure if it was OK to tell the game warden who visited later about the less than perfect capture.

Caught a 21" smallmouth on the ST.Louis River. Once in the boat I noticed fishing line coming out of its Anus hole. I pulled on the line lightly and out popped a 1/8th oz. jighead. Brand new not a scratch on it. Sharp enough to use later.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
