How was the walleye opener?

I'd characterize it as a slow opener on the St. Louis River. Saw very few fish caught, talked to only one boat that actually had a respectable catch, and did manage to get a 16" and a 19" 'eye myself, but a lot of work to do that in 3-1/2 hours. But it was just enough for a great early mother's day supper!

Did you get out any or are you still on the blush.gif treadmill? I've been busy so I never even thought frown.gif about going out. I've even been tempted to sell my boat being I never get out like I used to. There are enough people around with boats to tag along with? wink.gif Hint?
Stay warm & dry.

We had a good Opener. Maple Lake in NW MN. is usually a good opener. It was Windy and Rained almost the whole time. We started Fishing at 6 pm and quit at 9 pm. The wind was perfect for my favorite point using the Wave Buster Bobbers a 1/8oz Glow Jig and My Dad used the Foam Walker (casting out and slow retrieving).Leeches and crawlers both worked. I caught a 25", 21" and keeper size Walleyes. Most of the Walleyes were in 8 to 9' of water. We brought home 11 eaters. It was fun. Bruce Mosher

Fish Toys, We did not go on the opener, but HH and I plan on going Tuesday, sounds like the weather will be nice. Yes, still on the treadmill and cardiac rehab. You are welcome in our boat any time, just give me a call.

my 9 year old boy and I got 12 eyes on cut foot sat. morning. all between 15" - 17". He actually outfished me, 7 to 5. Must have been his method... have dad put shiner on jig, drop jig in water, let rod sit on edge of boat and screwaround, see rod tip bend, reel in fish. I guess the waves were doing the jigging for him. Was a good first opener for him, didn't complain when it rained or anything.

My dad cought a 29" and released it. Otherwise they ended up with 4 keepers.
(I didn't tell him til we got in that He could have kept that 29". He was under the impression that it had to be under 17". grin.gif

Caught 'eyes and bass on the St. Croix River, problem was all the 'eyes were around 14". Keeper size 'eyes were hard to find according to everyone we talked to and that was quite a few people.

I fished a lake near Alexandria and did ok. We ended up catching 5 eyes in 8' water with 3-ways and leeches. We couldn't keep the bass off our hooks no matter what! I bet we caught 50 of them mixed in with walleyes and northerns. Imagine if we'd actually targeted them.

I also saw a boat run into another. He had a tiller and couldn't see around the guy in the front of the boat. He hit a stationary boat at about 20 MPH but they all seemed alright. 5 minutes later they were fishing and everything was back to normal. Weird!

I headed out west and fished OtterTail Lake. I got on the water at about 4:30 and got 2 nice 15 inch walleyes out in front of the river mouth. Once the sun came up I couldn't get anything but decent sized Perch. The reports from other guys was that everyone was catching a lot of small fish, me and my dad got about 20 small walleyes. Towards dusk we pulled in another three 14 inch walleyes so we ended our opener with 5 respectable 'eyes. The weather wasn't too bad, it was pretty windy and it rained fairly consistentally. I heard that guys on the water at midnight caught their limits in front of the river mouth. The walleyes were mostly caught in 10' of water with 40' of water very near. All in all, a decent opener, we got dinner at least... smile.gif
