AVG free 9.0 installed now my comp is slow to load pages

Recommended Posts

Check to see what options you have checked. The more you have checked the more scanning it will do. You may have a firewall enabled.

One of my PCs gets pretty dang slow to load pages after a while. I wind up having to run a defrag and then it gets much better. This is the only one I have had that gets that bad.

Dump all your cookies and temporary internet files too. Do that before the defrag.

The new AVG is garbage like most of the Anti-virus's out there.

On my older less powerful machines I don't even run Anti-virus software any longer. It's not worth the pain and aggravation to me. If all your doing is checking E-Mail and a couple fishing web-sites you'll be fine with out an AV.

"flame away"

I know, probably not the greatest advice especially if you don't have things backed up and a restore image disk ready to go if needed.

It's just frustrating how much these Anti-virus packages bog your system down and then you still can end up with a virus no problem if your surfing or clicking on things you shouldn't be..

I agree I work in the IT field and when they added anti malware and anti spyware to our Enterprise Anti Virus client we had a whole group of marginal PCs become junk.

Some is a true issue, some is marketing hype. But I would say the biggest issue is people clicking OK to easily.

Easiest remedy if possible is to upgrade the RAM as that is where you get hit the hardest with the new AV software.

I've been running the freeware version of AVG 9.0 and haven't noticed any issues. They did add a live link scanner when they introduced v.9. Maybe you can just turn that feature off and see if that helps.

Prior to V.9 this was not a feature that was offered with the freeware version. If you were using the older versions you were in the same risk you are now. The link scanner scans websites as you open them so it added another layer of protection.

Somebody else can verify this but would you be smart to schedule full PC scans daily so if something does get through you have a chance to catch it a clean it? As others have said, the best defense is a good offense. ALWAYS be aware of what you are opening or downloading while online. Never blindly accept an invitation for anything. Learn which sites you can trust and be wary of others.

I love ESET NOD32! My computer runs great with it. Worth paying $$ to have something that protects and doesn't hog your system resources.

I will 2nd and 3rd this one. I have the antivirus on my XP machine upstairs and the suite (firewall and antivirus/malware etc) on the Vista laptop. No infections but plenty of "catches".

In fact a few weeks ago i was searching for the MN light rail web site to find the train schedules and stops and pricing for going to a twins game. I clicked a link to the MN dept of transportation and it caught a trojan or something from that link.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
