Humminbird 788ci

Question for you "bird" users out there. Bought a new 788ci for the bow and have been having a few issues with the sonar. I'm getting a very weak return for the bottom even when I know it's hard and not mucky. I've played with the sensitivity and surface clutter settings, but I'm still not getting that typical hard bottom red line with a secondary return. The ducer is the 200khz/83khz dual beam plus and is mounted to the bottom of the trolling motor. I also am getting vertical lines on the screen that show up on a pretty regular basis. Any ideas or some other information I should add to clarify what the problems are? Thanks in advance.

I few settings to check. First switch frequencies and see if that makes a difference. Also make sure you have it set to the correct transducer (if that's an option).

Don't hesitate to shoot Humminbird an email. They typically take only 24 hours to reply that route. Haven't tried but I've heard good things on the phone support.

One thing I would take a look at would be your power connection, sounds like you might be getting some interferance from something. Sometimes what I will do when something like that is going on is if you have a Vexilar battery laying around just make sure it is charged and hook your power rite to that and see if it makes a difference. If so it's a power thing.

Hope that helps.

I dont know if you are using a minn kota with a universal ducer but I had a similar problem on my last boat (2006) with a 937C running a minkota 101 and it turned out that with some of the Minn Kotas they need to be internaly grounded. I took it to the motor clinic and they did it no charge. That fixed the problem for me. I would call Minnkota or the motor clinic in Bloomington and tell them and see if they can offer advice. They have always been very helpful.

Good Fishing!!
