The One That Got Away!

To have your bait robbed/stolen is one thing, to have a rather larger fish unbutton on the way in is another, but when this happens:

It leaves ya scratching your head for even longer. grin

What was it?

I (kind of) have ruled out turtle because the bullhead was extremely lively, as far as I know Ed was not even on the water yesterday, & not turtle action was had previous or or post this experience. Channel? Walleye? Corner of the mouth on a monster flat that just pinched a bully the right way?

Ahhhh! The one that got away. grin

P.S.,

Do not ask why this bully is hooked via the mouth. Long story which raises more questions and hindsight. grin

big channel cat or flat I dont think it was a eye cause if you look close the bullie has abrasion marks on it above the severed mark.I also saw how your rod was bent after the hook set looked to be a nice fish.

I was also told that day that hind sight was always better like my other fish I missed, I shoulda letem take it longer winkgrin

and long story now thats funny laugh

You know, I have caught my fare share of turtles and this just did not feel like what I have experienced in the past. Certainly could have been a turtle.

Just add's to the story of "The One That Got Away". grin

Gordie ya lol! laugh You could compile a list of the words and phrases used towards "The One That Got Away".

"I should have let it take the bait longer"

"I let it take the bait too long"

"I should have set the hook to the right"

"I should have set the hook to the left"

"I should have set the hook strait up in the air"

"I should have hooked the bait in the back"

"I should have hooked the bait by mouth"

"I should have been using circle hooks"

"I should have been using J style"

"I should I have been using a Mustad brand hook"

"I should have been you Gamakatsu brand hooks"

"I should have been using mono"

"I should have been using braid"

"I should have been using a longer leader"

"I should have been using a shorter leader"

and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on! grin

It's all part of the mystery. Unraveling the secrets of the river is what keeps us going out on the water day after day. I bet it's a long time before you pass that stretch of water again without stopping to wet a line.

Tom I also thought maybe northern. Its just part of the mystery we call "fishing da river". grin Just honestly can not remember bringing in a bullhead with this much collateral damage before and no it was not caused me by Borch. grin I did have my back turned for minute or two right before the situation occurred and IMO would not put Gordie past anything when he needs to throw his grub down. wink

Yes 4WE, Samsquach did cross my mind. grin

The spot Gordie caught the big one, I was fishing there by myself one night, it was about 2 am, and I was just sitting there, zoned off with my eyes closed, and something jumped in the water from the bank, and was splashing like mad, by the time I found my spot light, to see what it was, all I seen was ripples in the water, a couple feet from my boat. Now this wasnt a beaver, this was at least a couple hundred pounds hitting the water, then it was splashing for a few seconds afterwards. I reeled in about as fast as you can, and got out of there quickly. I figured what ever it was, I didnt want to hang around and see it again, it didnt like me sitting there, and I took it as a warning. This is a true story!

That is hilarious and creepy at the same time. Probably a monster Snapper or one of those manbearpigs.
