Taking youngsters turkey hunting.

Recommended Posts

I spent the first morning of season G taking a couple youngsters out on their first turkey hunts. We had a close encounter this morning. We went to a piece of land we have seen turkeys on many times before and we got out about 20 minutes before shooting time and I didn't have a real good idea where to set up so we spent the first 40 minutes in the field trying to locate birds. We finally got a Tom to respond off in the distance. We moved up as close as we could and they were still in the roost. Once we got set up I started calling. For about 5 minutes we had a very good conversation (the turkeys and I). Then a tom flew down. And after that there was one last gobble and nothing else. They just stopped talking. This is totally different then the 3 toms I called in for my buddy yesterday morning. They were noisy and po'ed all the way to my B mobile. This morning started out the same but ended in silence. We ended up seeing 2 toms for sure, and 1 unknown possibly a hen or jake. I do not know what spooked them or stopped them from being so chatty but the closest they got was about 50-60 yards before they decided to mosey on their way.

All in all it was a good first morning. Both boys were pretty excited, and it was a very positive first experience. I think with a little more time and effort we will get one on the ground. I will keep updating our weekend. We are gonna go out again in a couple hours and the rest of the weekend. The woods will probably be rather empty with all of Minnesota chasing the ever so popular walleye this weekend.

Every morning is going to be different. What you just experienced is not at all uncommon. Keep at it and good luck puting those kids on birds.

Got a young man his first turkey this morning. It was a Jake with a 4 inch beard and 5/8 inch spurs. Came in on a string. It was a riot to see how excited he got. One young man down two to go plus hopefully one for myself next week in season H.

I had my son (13yo.) out this morning. Last night we watched 3 toms head into the woods at dark and I came up with the plan for this morning. This morning we got to our spot and hustled out there was 2 spots I wanted to set the blind. Guess what I chose the wrong spot we had a hen come out first then 3 long beards struttin away for what seemed like an hour just outside of range for his 20ga. at 55yds. His eyes were as big as silver dollars watching these guys do there thing. The hen eventually led them away and I sat there kicking myself for not putting the blind in the other spot. I was really suprised at how he kept his composure Friday night we had a bird at 100yds. and he was shaking like crazy. He's a little upset with me because I said if he used my gun (12ga 3") I would've let him take a poke at them. I'm planning on letting this spot sit for a couple days before going back. We'll see what happens next time.

Great pictures, he sure looks proud of that bird in the first one.

I shot a Tom last year with that same coloring on the tail. I'd bet you were north of town when you got that one. Pretty common in that area. Don't suppose you were the one we heard last Sat morning at 5:45 am?
