Fighting Sioux II

Recommended Posts

Another upcoming graduate wanted a Sioux rod similar to the other one I've built. So I came up with this one for him. Bill and Al at Midwest Rod and Reel set me up with a Batson RDR70M blank and I really like those new winding checks they've been selling so got one of those also. I turned the oak grips and used the New Guide Concept System on this build to get the guides set just right.

Here's my secret. When I'm turning the handle on the lathe I start with a 3/4" forstner bit and drill in up to 3/16". It leaves a tiny dimple in the center of the wood.

I then use the dimple to center a brad point bit to drill entirely throught the wood. The smaller bore after the 3/4" start leaves a small shelf that will hold a penny, which is exactly 3/4" in diameter.

After I turn and sand the handle I use a reamer to get the wood to fit the blank without using shims. Then I print a 3/4" decal and attach it to a penny and use 5 minute epoxy to adhere it on that shelf. Depending how deep I bore that initial 3/4" hole the penny can either end up flush to the surface or be recessed.

In the case of this rod I used silver metallic paper and on the other rod I used holographic paper. After the adhesive sets I just cover the entire surface with the same epoxy I use on the guides.

Thanks, I do something similar for the butt ends, but just use a coin. So you are printing something similar to a decal and attaching it to a penny and then sealing it with epoxy?

I may have to try something like that. I have used buffalo nickles and some of the cooler quarters. I have one that I made for the wife with button with a flower on it. I was looking a viking one for the last rod I did, but I used a nickel with the lewis and clark ship on, looks kinda like a viking ship smile

Yes. The holographic and metallic papers are peel and stick. Here's what I do:

1. Print the image on the paper, let it dry.

2. Spray with a few light coats of Krylon Crystal Clear, let them dry.

3. Use a 3/4" hole punch to pop the image from the paper. I got the punch at either Michaels or Joann Fabrics.

4. Peel and stick the image onto the penny.

5. 5-minute Epoxy the penny into the butt, let dry.

6. Use thread epoxy to cover the penny, one or two coats.

BISON Alum that bleeds Sioux green for hockey, and Bison gold for football. (there are more of us than one might imagine)

When I sell my 6 casinos I'll buy the Sioux a new hockey rink, and the Bison a new football stadium.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
