I stopped at home depot after searching yesterday(in vain) and the guy behind the counter said "OMG theirs a tick on your shirt!" (looked like he had seen a ghost) So I picked it off and held it tight. I looked up and the guy was backing away with his hands raised. like I had a loaded gun in my hands. I don't think I will run into that sissy in the woods!

Lol! It reminds me of the time I had one of those flimsy containers of Wax worms in my coat after Ice fishing which got crushed in my coat pocket and at work they all started to crawl out and up my coat! I thought the woman at work would never talk to me again! laugh

I got out for a couple hours today. There was only one Elm that showed any, and under that one I got over a gallon of them. My tried and true places from other years were bare. Lunch today was steak, fresh asparagus, and butter-fried morels.

Got a question for guys who dehydrate morels and use them later. I was thinking of rehydrating them with white wine and using them in scrambled eggs. Anyone ever try that?

I have been out a couple of days, found 3 grays on Friday and found 18 yellows today but half of them were getting dry. we really need some good rain and some warm temps to get them going. In one wetter area I found one that was around 6" to 8", wish I could find some more like that, still seems early and dry.

Talking about finding shrooms around trees other then elms, I have once found one shroom right under a live oak last year. Other wise I have only found them around dead elms.

I finally found some in the St. Cloud area. Of the 20 or so in the area I only grabbed 3, the rest were too dry blackened and shriveled up. This area is very good, lots of dead elms in a small area. Once again like others have said these were out in the open, all dead trees in area no canopy at all and grass on the ground. The wind is drying 'em quick I'm sure.

Question is: Will they continue to fruit in that area after another rain and some warmer temps? Should I keep checking the area throughout May?

Gopher n.As long as we dont get a spell of Hot dry weather the shrooms should continue to pop for a while yet.I was in the far north metro this morning, and found some large and small greys growing. No yellows yet at my location there, but some rain is really needed,at least where I was....Happy hunting....

It's all been near poplar stands, some young, some old. The younger thicker stands with a lot of moss have been best. Here's a pic for an idea, trees aren't the clearest, but you get the idea...

Took my son out today for his first picking experience. We worked the same area I was in yesterday. He's 2.5, and he lasted about 20 minutes. We bagged 23 in two spots. We had them tonight with some fresh fiddleheads in fettucini alfredo. Delish!

Leech, here's a better pic of the habitat...

Matt, thanks for the pic gives me a better idea that I have been in the wrong spots when up north. Looks like the son has a good start on what to look for and that dinner plate couldn't look better! smile I did find about 52 nice yellows in the last few days but I think my spots down this way are just about done. I'll be looking in the woods up by our camper in Brainerd starting this weekend. P.S How do the fiddle head ferns taste?

Can I find morels around the Duluth area? I am not looking for any locations but I have never looked for them before and I don't know a whole lot about them so how far north do they grow, and how long will they be out for because I know they only last a few weeks. It sounds like everybody on here is in the southern half of the state so I would like to know whether or not I should even bother looking. Thanks

I found about 3 dozen blacks last night near my place, the weather finally cleared enough for me to get out there. I was rewarded for my efforts, I found a few more patches that I didn't get a good look at because the kids were getting hungry. This weekend, I'll be out again.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
