itchmesir
I've never fished with a guide before.. and i got a couple questions...1) I'm looking to do something awesomely fun this late summer.. i took a week off of work in august.. originally planned for an out of state trip.. but decided it would be more sensible to stay in state or the surrounding area... could you help me find a muskie guide? i've never fished for or caught a muskie... preferably in an area that will be accessible to camping and other fishing... preferably stream trout.. or any shore fishing..2) when you hire a guide.. how much am i looking to spend.. and do they supply me with gear.. or would i have to go out and buy a muskie rod and lures?thank youE
blakeb
For a guided trip you bring a licence, and your a$$ that is unless you have a new cool rod your itching to throw lures with, doesnt sound to be your problem,350-400$ for a guide,Call jason hammerick musky breath guide service, could be one o the best around. cbrooks
There's so many good guides. Narrow it down to an area or lake that you would like to fish and then pick the guide.
Whisker Warrior
I will second MuskyStalker as i did multiple trips with Dave last year and i was fortunate enough to land a 52.5" while fishing the late season with him...My friend and I did some filming for him and he also redid his HSOforum and i believe if you reserve a date now he's running a discount. Great guy to be out in the water with...wont rest till he puts you on a fish...excellent camping up there and he's mainly in the Alexandria area but travels to DL. bronzeback
guide reccomendations definitely depend a lot on the location you're looking to fish. The Brainerd Area has a lot of options and if you chose a guide in that area he'd be able to pick and choose the best lake considering the conditions for the day that you're scheduled. And there is a small trout stream in the area though I've never tried to catch any trout out of there. A lot of camping options around too.I went out with Tim Anderson and we originally planned to hit Mille Lacs, but motor problems and bad weather put us on a smaller body of water and we ended up putting three fish in the boat. One for each of us. Find a guide that you know has a proven track record, I'd also reccomend you make sure it's a local guy and not somebody that decided to move to the area and give guiding a try. Esox_Magnum
I agree about hiring a local, not the traveling guide chasing the latest hot bite. The local will be more in tune if you hit a bad bite day increasing your odds of boating fish.
HorseshoeChain
cbrooks has solid advice there. Pick WHERE you want to fish first. That being said, I haven't met a nicer guide than Brad Hoppe -Musky Mayhem.
scsavre
Very true Pick the location. Go with a local guide. I dont know where you will find both Muskies and a trout stream. The only guide I would recommend is Jerry Sondag of [Note From Admin: Please read forum policy before posting again. Thank you.]He is in the Detroit Lakes area, and honestly I dont know if anybody catches more big fish. You will be mighty comfortable in the back of his brand new Ranger.
