DNR survey

Recommended Posts

There is a 15 question survey to fill out on the MN DNR web site. I'm not sure if this has been posted here yet or not. I hope people take a chance to take this survey. Some of the stuff the DNR is proposing in crazy. Like using dogs to hunt turkey in Oct. WHAT THE! Please check it out. There in a space at the bottom for comments. I let em have it. The space wasn't big enough!

I took the survey. At the beginning it looked to be about most of the deer related issues. But then it turned into duck and turkey survey. I have no business answering questions for either of those since I do not hunt either of them. Its to bad they cannot have seperate surveys for seperate issues instead of trying to lump everything together

For the questions that didn't pertain to me or what I hunt, I put Don't Care, however may have been better worded to put Not Applicable. In many of the cases, the DNR proposals are from public pressure. I have no idea where the hunt turkeys with dogs comes in, but I am assuming it could only come from some groupl that wants it. It does not mean that it will happen, or that they even support it.

I'm thinking the push for dogs for fall turkeys is so that if someone is pheasant hunting with a dog they could shoot a turkey. I don't think it would effect things much as fall turkey seasons are limited to areas with lots of turkeys, and it is a either sex hunt. If a turkey is clipped with #4, or #5 lead shot a good dog should be able to track it very well.

Shooting a turkey flushed while pheasant hunting has a very low odds chance of making a clean kill. They are very tough birds and NEED to be head shot.

The method of fall turkey hunting that people use dogs for is to break up and scatter flocks with a dog, then sit down and call the "lost" separated birds back together.

Anyway, before filling out the survey, check out the interactive information on the DNR site. It takes about 10 minutes and explains the deer regulation portion of the survey.

It also points out that IF these new regs get put into place, they will be evaluated for effectiveness and hunter satisfaction after 3 years.

Bruledrifter is correct it is a very comon practice in other states and you need a well trained dog for it you send the dog in to break up the flock and then call the birds back in when they are trying to relocate each other with your dog crouched and not moving at your side to not spook them away.
