iced up gutters

Recommended Posts

My rain gutters are huge blocks of ice still. I know that if I salt them down, they will become ice free, but that will also kill all of my grass where the salt ends up. Is there something else I can do to get rid of the ice in my gutters?

A one-time application of salt won't harm your grass. Grass is tough stuff. Then use the heat tape. Ultimately, if you keep getting ice dams, you have issues with not enough attic insulation or not enough roof venting, or both. Until those are fixed, once with the salt and then with the heat tape from then on is the recipe.

Snow removal will also help a lot, since no snow=no ice dams forming. For my handyman/maintenance customers, I use a great product called the MinnSnowta Roof Razor (sold online). All done from the ground with minimal effort.

I second the MinnSnowta Roof Razor for removing the snow off the roof. It's like a cheese cutter on wheels for snow! They have a HSOforum with all the information & ordering details, took only three days to have it delivered to my door.

Had the same problem, heat tape in the gutter and the pipe under the driveway and no problems any more. Not very expensive and all you have to do is plug it in. Oh, and take it out in the spring and put it back n in the fall. Other wise leaves and [PoorWordUsage] get caught on it the rest of the year
